Unhappy Disco 2 TD5 Lacks Power???? HELP!

I have had a Disco 2 TD5 manual for about 8000kms now & have just returned from 2 weeks camping along the Murray.
This was my first trip towing the camper trailer, approx 1000kg, also had a half rack with a rack bag.

I have always been led to believe that the Disco TD 5 was an excellent tow vehicle, in my case nothing could be further from the truth!
The lack of power was unbelievable, sure we had a strong headwind on the way up there, but on the flat could only achieve 90kmh with the ability to overtake merely a distant memory from my previous vehicle, a Nissan Terrano 2 2.7 TDI, towing a heavier camper.

On hills, at times I was back to 3rd gear doing around 65kmh flat out, in fact changing down didn't appear to make any significant difference, other than increase the noise level.

I have never driven a Disco TD5 before so I didn't really know what to expect, but I am assumig that something must be wrong, the Terrano 2 would run rings around it on a bad day!

There are no other symptoms that something may be wrong (other than 17 litres per 100, laden & towing), starts well, idles well, temperature is rock steady & seems to be OK unladen.

Any suggestions as to where I should start?
I am not too keen on spending thou$and$ to have it diagnosed on a 'trial by error' basis, ie: replace parts at random until it fixes it.

It would be worth seeing if someone local has a diagnostics tool. That could pinpoint an error.

There are a number of things, mechanical or electronic that can reduce the power.

    Delaminated intercooler hoses,
    weak fuel pump
Oil in the ecu loom / plugs
    Faulty sensors

    etc etc.

    17l/100km seems high to me...

Thanks for the answers, I will follow them all through, although I am sure it isn't the trailer brakes.
Would a dirty MAF cause this lack of power?

Would it perform better with it disconnected than with it dirty?

Holed turbo hoses, dirty air filter; couple of easy ones to check.
