Thread: D2 V8 Fuel Pump

My D2 V8 has made the same noise from time to time for as long as I have had it, but it still keeps pumping fuel. I suspected it might be the ACE, but have never been able to pin it down. Will be interested in what yours turns out to be.

Down in Mexico Eastern Suburbs (Nunawading Area).

Was told that had to go with a Landrover units as it's something to do with the retun line in them?

Is it also worth mentioning that I am running the 4.6L V8 in it not the 4.0L.

Like I said I can only see it being the fuel pump, Grumndriva mentioned ACE but the pump etc is located in th engine bay isn't it? The noise directly relates to the inputs on the accelerator. It may be something I could leave but I am trying to ensure it's reliable and don't want to end up being stuck and putting on a tow truck. Plus it would give my Cruiser/Patrol driving friends more ammunition........

My suspicion, and that is all it was, is that it is the rear ACE actuator, and then only because, firstly, it is intermittent, and secondly, being a "horn" sound, it could be caused by fluid passing through a small orifice, and I couldn't think of what else it could be. My vehicle has made the noise for the past 80,000 km (since I bought it) and I know that the fuel pump works fine since it was tested recently when we did the 4.6 litre upgrade. I find I and my passengers notice it more often when the vehicle is hot and has been driven around town.

Be sure to let us know if the new fuel pump cures it on your vehicle.

D2 fuel pumps need to be higher pressure as they have a non return system that works on 3.5 bars not 2.5.

So a Commodore pump maybe will not pump at a high enough pressure.

Perhaps there are some out there that are suitable. Have a look at the Walbro site.

Yes my initial thought was getting a aftermarket pump like a walbro, but two seperate LD specialists indicate you need the LD unit, there is no aftermarket one that will suit.

Very Interesting how you describe it. As indicated my initial assumption based on previous fuel pump experience is that it was exactly that the fuel pump. However it is a very light horn noise that's the only way I can describe it, and is more noticeable in the heat, both from a sound perspective and it's frequency. Hence again why I thought the pump under hot conditions.

Now I'm really confused.....

I think I will take the punt and leave it, if the car fails then I know it's the fuel pump. It'[s interesting you said you had it tested, as when i had the 4.6 upgrade they told me they cannot test the pump, which I found weird.

Does you car still make the noise? And if so is there a fix for the ACE noise?

Mine makes that noise. Has since i owned it too. My fuel pump is stuffed for diferent reasons - it just makes a new higher pitched fuel pump noise and runs out of fuel with the guage syaing 2/3 of a tank left.

I paid $650 for the new one but haven't fitted it yet.
