Gday Kevin,I'll put my 2bobs worth in,Im on my 3rd disco this one is a td5 2001, done 200k and have had a relatively trouble free run,most problems you will read about in this forum.The S1 300 tdi had a recall on the timing belt , of course this happened after mine broke and L/R basically said bad luck. I would be looking at how regular these have been changed. The alpine windows are very prone to rusting under the rubber and then leak inside under the roof lining so have a good look there. The roof lining sags in most as the glue doesnt seem to handle the heat. I had the brake master cylender leak on both my S1 before they got to 100k so look closely around there.Otherwise I never had much trouble..(mine were all diesel) dont know much about the v8.

Those years cover either the late D1's or an early D2. Each has its own separate issues and then diesel versions have a different set of issues from the petrol ones.

Try using the search function and you'll find the same question has been asked plenty of times before so you'll find some good info.

What are you planning to use it for - daily driver, touring, weekend toy etc?
Also, what's your budget and do you plan to work on it yourself or pay someone else to do it?

Don't do it. now don't say no one warned you.
Think hard about going for a 2003 and later. Will prob' save you money in the long run.( better puter,cdl etc...)
Go the TD5, diesel is cheaper than Petrol today.
Either have a big wallet or a good knowledge of mechanics. The later so you at least don't get riped off by people who don't.
My 2001 TD5 has over 200,000 ks and I feel the motors just run in. But the clutch has been its Achilles heel.(everything has now been replaced including the fly wheel.) Now just to sort the ABS.

Landrover dealer in Darwin charges $120p/h for work and a minimum of 1hr,you soon learn at those prices...

thats a stealership for you and all makes are the same

at least most stealership keep a stock of parts,I should open a L/Rover parts service in Darwin,would be alot better than those robbers,if I stocked some filters and belts i'd have more.

man thatwould suck not being able to get parts, to give you an idea on the ease of parts in newcastle, i bought a pressure bottle(modified one) off the shelf for $90, yesterday i broke a fan belt on the way home, 3km down the road i bought one of the shelf, than i wasnt sure on the routing of it, so 5 km the other way i bought a service manual of the self, i guess it depends where you are as for availability,

I'm about to buy another Discovery. I now own a 1993 Tdi, I've had it for 6 years without a problem (without mentioning the lack of syncro on 1st/2nd and now clunking on 3rd) but it is looking past it's best, the interior is really poor. I can afford a late '90s model. Do I go for a 200 series or a TD5? ( there seems to be a fair number of problems with the Td5). Secondly the wife wants to be able to drive it, (yes I know I shouldn't let her) so it will have to be an automatic. Is the automatic box on the old 200 series Tdi's OK?
