D2 Front speaker removal

Gday All
Ive just pulled the rear speakers out of Mat2D2 and replaced them. Was able to squeeze some 6"ers in (only had to drill one extra hole per speaker to make em fit

)which pleases me no end. I had a manual to show me how to pull the various bits off. worked a treat took less than 20min to replace

However when I did the same for the front Ive hit a snag. Its reckons I pull the 4 odd screws out and the map holder (whatever its called) with the speaker grill just pops off. Well I pulled all the screws out and she aint going nowhere.

I didnt pull any harder for fear of breaking something

Is there something else I have to do to get it off. Im hoping I dont have pull the whole front door inner off just to access the front speaker.

yessssssssssssssss, its a bugger, i have replaced mine & yes, you have to pull the whole door trim off!!

Once you pull the trim off, there are more things you have to unscrew, & from memory, the speakers are attached to the door trim, so when you pull the trim off, be careful you dont rip the wires out. i think you can unclip them, but dont quote me on that. Lay the trim on the floor & screw the speakers onto the trim. Hope this helps, probably not the answer you were after.

Yep it sure is a job and a half. I have some nice Iridium Splits in there and it took quite a while to do. Mine are 6.5" I just widened the holes with a dremel (both in the door trim and the pocket/speaker surround) and put in some new screws. I found that the best place for the tweeters was in the A-Pillar where the factory ones are found. This is of course subjective.

And yes as Dave mentioned be careful when taking off the trim as the speakers are attached to it. Just take your time and it will work out well.

me thinks it might be head unit and sub woofer first then fade to rear for a bit if thats the case

its not really that bad, sort of......just take your time, the 1st one is the slowest one the second much quicker cos you know what you're doing.

well I finally took the punt to do mine after fitting a new head unit. LR certainly have a sense of humour. What should be a 5 min job (if they allowed clearance to unscrew and remove speakers from the front after removing the mesh) is a technically simple, but unnecessarily protracted, process! Still the end result was well worth it - for a $60K car, the standard front speakers were rather crap to say the least...
