    TD5 Oil leaks

    Hey guys,
I have an o1 TD5 disco, i'm having some probs at the moment with oil leaks.

Are there common places they leak from?
I have oil coming from the top joint of the i/c pipe where it enters the intake manifold. Has anyone had this prob?

    Any help appreciated,

    Cheers Steve

    Hi Steve,
    Common leaks for these are,

Front of head, large 'core' plug
    rocker cover gasket gone hard.
the above mentioned intercooler hose,(BTW, a high quality hose clamp will stop the mess...)
Loose oil filter (More common than you think...)

Less common, but just as messy is the cam box sealant breaking down and leaking oil out through the 2 halves.( Quite an expensive fix as the head bolts need to be removed to repair it, which in essence is a head gasket replacement job)

Also, the fuel block leaks diesel down the RH rear of the head/ block. THAT is a messy leak.

I also have the oil in the inlet. I hope its coming from the rocker cover breather. An oil separator has been discussed in other treads, maybe some one will have a pointer to it.
Ive been thinking of a sealed catch tank feeding back into the inlet up stream of the turbo as it is now. Ive seen small ones for sale at super cheap, cheap. Or I may try and make one.(lock up the tupperware)

Gday, My car had an oil leak I was away at sea at the time and 3 different mechanics told my wife it was the oil filter, when I got back I found it to be the gasket that holds the oil filter housing to the block.Changing the gasket was easy getting the oil pipe from the bottom of the turbo bolted back on was a shocker.

Had all those done on the different TD5's i have had ,most under warranty.

The other one is the sump gasket....They seem to leak on occasions.

    Cheers guys,

Is the i/c pipe one a big prob? ie. where is it coming from?

As i'm pretty new to the D2 and the TD5 what other common probs do they have?

    Hi Steve,,

    there are a few,,

but the Td5 is pretty much all sorted these days,,

Maintenance seems to be the key,, but you do get a LOT of car/engine/ability for your trouble,,

the SEARCH function should help you on specifics,,

    of course there is ALWAYS,,

Oil in the intercooler hoses. Most diesels have oil mist wich condenses and becomes a yucky oil film over the intake tract.
There are 2 fixes that should be done to improve the situation.
EGR removal. The TD5 has an EGR system(exhaust gas recycling),its computer controlled, exhaust gas is fed into the intake manifold to "clean up" emmisions. It isnt needed shortens engine life and reduces engine output.Search EGR Removal.
Blowby filtering.Another emmisions issue that can be modified.Crancase blowby is fed direct into the air inlet tract,it is VERY unhealth for turbo diesels to burn this, its rich with oil mist that can carbonize in the turbo. The fix is a filter that condenses the oil mist and returns the oil condensate to the sump and the filtered blowby gasses into the inlet system as normal.Search Pro Vent.Lots of pics/info on AULRO as many of us took part in a University based trial.
Another leak spot is the oil pressure sender, its just behind the turbo, the heat deterioates them.

I've recently joined the Land Rover family with a 2003 Disco TD5 and had a drama with a threaded metal pipe that transports transmission oil(excuse the wording, no mechanic by any means but trying to learn) worked itself free and leaked a huge amount of oil. TRansmission fella who fixed it said he saw another TD5 with the same problem.
