Well I got sick of reaching over to unlock the passengers door. I ordered a new original door lock mechanism from British4WD in Tasmania. Good service and good price. The part arrived at my office the next day.
This afternoon I fitted it. A bit fiddly and required the door trim, and door mirror to be removed. Next unbolt the window frame and slide it up about 12". This gives enough room to slide the door lock mechanism out as it wraps around the rear post of the window frame. There's 5 bolts to undo to lift the frame up. 2 at the bottom of the frame posts inside the door. 2 torx head bolts on the ends of the door near the top and one bolt hiding just below the door mirror.
All done now and it works a treat. Just got to wait for the next one to fail.

I have an issue like this on my 2001 Disco 2, the tab will pop up showing the door is unlocked but neither the interior or exterior handle works. This is not intermitant. If I push down the tab that locks the door then pull the interior handle it will pop back up again but the door will not open. I think this issue was caused by someone pulling the handle to open the door and the central locking button to unlock the door being pressed at the same time. Have looked at pulling off the interior door trim to manually spring the lock but its a bit difficult to get at and avoid damaging the trim. Is it possible to spring the opening mechanism somehow?Quote:

Get problems like this on rear door. Eventually found two parts to the solution. External Mechanism gets rusted, friend suggested mixing up Wax with petrol, this lets you spray the stuff with a trigger bottle into the handle mechanism and leaves the wax there to lubricate. Some guy up on frasier showed me the following trick, push in and up on the door before you try to open the door. You may not have the same problem but this has worked for me for a few years now.
My rear door goes spastic on me if I do a lot on dirt. Have to give a real push (closing action) on the rear door and hope that takes the pressure off the lock enough to get it to open. Then I just get in with a water hose or even just a water bottle and squirt all the mechanism and that settles it down. Once it happens I give it a squirt every day I remain on the dirt. Same for the little strut mechanism under the door that keeps it open. I figure water will dry quickly and not accumulate dirt.
