Locker rear in D2 with open centre diff?

Hi all. The clunk in my rear end is worrying me. I am thinking that while Im replacing planetary gears I might as well look at getting a much stronger set up such as an ARB Air Locker. I dont have CDL - for what I do I have always made it with traction control. I know that I cannot mechanically force drive to be split between front and rear axles without CDL (I dont have the internals so its an expensive job for me to lock the centre up!) but if I have a rear locker fitted and activated both rear wheels will turn at the same time, and if a front wheel starts to spin, drive will start to be deprived from the rear to that front wheel (because no CDL to keep half to the rear axle) but then etc kicks in to brake that wheel and drive will then be restored to the opposing front wheel and also back through the open CD and to the rear giving positive drive to 3 wheels and limiting drive to the traction challenged wheel....now there might be some lag, but I would have thought that having the rear locked will help because any drive going to the rear diff drives both rear wheels equally and the system does not have to be challeged with multiple wheels potentially slipping at the same time....what happens though if both front wheels lose traction, will the ETC put enough braking on those front wheels to transfer enough drive to the rear to keep up momentum in most situations that you would need it (such as uphill scrabble in dirt/gravel with weight off the front...?).

    Cheers and thanks

Given the cost of all those parts .... Buy a used TC box with CDL and just install it

A locker in the rear will help a lot, I have a rear Maxi locker and at times have forgotten to activate the CDL, it will drive up things much easier with the rear locker in and no CDL than just the TC alone.

Also have a word with Bundalene, he may be able to help with both a rear diff and transfer box + CDL at a good price

    Good onya

My thoughts were going .. Your spending money to repair the TC ... might as well put the money on a TC with CDL ... This solves the "core" problem

Once you have the CDL ... she will motor up hills ... The lockers just make it better

Another try is TRS in SA

Thanks Mike - I undertand where you are coming from. It seems that the centre diff might only need shimming to take out some slack and the lay shaft oil problem fixed. Thus I dont need to go to the expense of replacing the CD - although if I did I would go to CDL. But the diff may end up being very different - ie if I need to replace it due to planetary gears going out to lunch I might as well stick in somthing stronger, so I might as well go ARB and get the benefit of it being a locker also....

    Cheers
