The 02 will have a remap capable ECU. The 99 will have the CDL components the 02 won't.
Hi all,
A mate of mine is looking at two Disco2s. One is a 99 with 80000kms on it and the other is an 02 with 130000kms on it.
Both are base model automatic Td5s.
Are there any great differences between the two?
All I could think of was that the 02 might not have the internal CDL components and the 99 might not have the easily chipped ECU.
He doesn't think the CDL will be an issue as he is over the off road stuff and just wants to tow his van. I thought he might like to chip it in the future because of the van.
He will buy one or the other this week I'd think. He already has a deposit on the 02 (before the 99 showed up).
Interestingly the 02 has blanking plates on the bumper where the headlight washers should be and it also has manual wing mirrors.
So are there any great differences?
Thanks

There are a few more differences too.
02 is likely to have steel head dowels.
99 will have plastic.
02 may have Catalyst..? not sure on that
99 wont
02 will have water cooled EGR
99 will just have Non water cooled version.
02 will have 3 track throttle pedal
99 will have 2 track.
For goodness' sake, tell him if he buys the '99 model to get the oil pump bolt checked before he drives it anywhere. I didn't and I paid the price. Even with the '02 but especially with the '99.
Thanks for the input guys.
I'll forward this to him tomorrow to help him make his decision.
My Oct02 build my03 still has plastic dowels (going by the vin when changed to steel), so the my02 should too.
Whilst my my03 has the egr cooler, I've seen another my03 that doesn't so they must have been introduced sometime in the my03 range.
Is it my02 or just a 2002 build date? Twin pocket headlights is the tell-tale sign of my03.

My D2 is a 99 model, manual though. Personally, I'd go for the 99 as you have the CDL and won't have to pay extra to get it, and believe me its very handy indeed. As far as the oil pump bolt goes, mine has done over 250 000kms, and no trouble at all, but I will remove the sump soon and check it just for peace of mind. As with all D2's watch for the dreaded amigoes, its hard to tell when your buying, but pretty much as soon as mine hit 100 000kms they came out of the cage. But then again, it only happens on some cars, not all of them.
Hope that helps with your decision
Cheers Hendrik
