    VIBRATION Through Gear Stick

I have a disco 2 manual gearbox. I dont drive it that much as I have a Hilux company car. Since I replaced a hub last week I swaped with the wife to see how it was driving. There seems to me to be an unusual vibration comming through the gear stick. Is this normal and if not what could be causeing it.

Does anyone know if theses gearboxes have problems mine has don 140,000ks

Excuse my spelling cant seem to edit it out of the heading!!!

    Thanks Mike

    Um... That's the engine..

No seriously, I have manual and have 220k on the clock and don't have any issues apart from some notchiness changing to and from second gear. This is common from what I hear and the box has been like that since 110k.

Not sure why you are getting vibration after fitting a new hub. Sure you fitted it right? It might be sending vibrations through the drive line. Does it feel like just the gear knob vibrating or does it feel like more than that? Might be gear box or engine mounts.

Also is there also steering vibration? If it was a hub you would think there would be some.

Dont think it has anything to do with the hub. That all went together well I got the fitters at work to undo the axel bolt and retorqe it up to 360lb ft .

I noticed the high pitched vibration through the stick while test drivig the Disco after fitment. Remember I dont drive this vehicle much as I have a company car.

The vibration is similar to one that I got in a 2001 79 series landcruiser trayback. I kept asking the dealer to check it at service they kept saying nothing wrong then at 117,000 ks the gearbox through 5th gear through the box and $$%%%^ it. Just out warranty to I might add fortunately because I had raised concerns during the warranty period they fixed it for free. Aparently this was a common problems in this year model until an upgrde was made in the next year.

My current hilux doesnt have any feedback vibration through the stick at all and this is probvably why I noticed it in the disco. It may just be normal but to me feels like a bearing somewhere is not happy. Some causes for toyota gearbox failures acording to dealer is driving in 5th gear to slow.

Is this similar for the Disco, I noticed my wife in 5th at 60 kph and it seems to be quite happy although wont accelerate rapidly.

Angus I will check all the mounts gearbox ands engine today , have a feel of your stick and see if there if you can feel a high pitced resinence its not shaking , and only when moving at 60ks or above.

While having a good look at my front prop shaft yesterday , I noticed some oil around t/fer case and some at rear of engine. Not a bad leak but a bit its the start of something.

UM<I hope it is the engine

It really won't cost all that much to get your front propshaft out and rebuilt (see separate thread on this topic) and rebalanced as a precaution anyway.

That would be the most obvious cause of vibration.

Your wheels might be out of balance as well. I've had this happen to me, got the wheel balanced and it was all sweet. I can also recommend rebuilding the front prop shaft, I got mine balanced and it got rid of pretty much all the vibrations in the car.

    Hi Mike
If you drive a TD5 the flywheel is worn.(double inertia)
Petrol, try the wheel balance first then the propshafts.
If your Disco sees the desert a lot, try the propshafts.
House wife driving sees a lot of stop starts. = flywheel.

    I recently replaced my TD5 Flywheel 200,000Ks+ clutch 100,000Ks.
There were a lot of vibration on the gear lever but did not notice it as I drive it every day. 3Km stop start and then 75Km's at 100Km/h.

I will bet you that it is the flywheel.
The bet will be that AUS and the RSA will be in the Super 14 finals.
The prize. Have a beer at HOME. (or go offroad some where)
    Cheers

I'd say it could be the flex joint in the exhaust if you have the early stainless webbing one, or an engine mount.

Since changing my flex joint, the car is much smoother and no bad vibes through the gear stick.
