I would be more inclined to say it was the wheel hub, unforunately they are a sealed unit, so no way of repairing it.
They are easy to remove though, which is the good thing about D2s.

Hi all
My D2 makes has a ticking noise on the front driver side wheel. It happens every time the axle articulates, when the front wheel drops into a hole and then as it comes out you can hear this clear ticking noise. Could it be the CV or something else? It happens every time the wheel is in a certain position, when weight it returned on it when compressing up. It is only one "tick" though, and when it it pushes back into the guard, its gone. I heard it for the first time last night when doing some tame stuff, with only simple articulation. Could the 2inch lift have anything to do with it maybe? The only reason I think its a CV, is that a ticking noise usually indicates that it is on its way out.
Sorry for all the questions, but I would really like to get to the bottom of this.
Cheers
Hendrik

Does it tick if you drive slowly at full lock, to the left or right?
It only happens when i drive really slowly over rough terrain, like low range 2nd gear slow. It does it when the wheels are straight, I haven't noticed it in high range at full lock, it sounds fine then.
Baz, what could be wrong with the wheel hub, would it have play when I jack the wheel up and shake the wheel itself from side to side?
Thanks for your help guys
Cheers

Bearings are what can cause the ticking, check by pulling towards you side to side for any movement.
Just thinking it may well be your front shaft ticking under load, they can do this after a lift, was this noise there before the lift and CDL install??
It may well be the front shaft ticking because of the extra angle after the lift.
I have a clicking/ticking noise from my D2 but only when the CDL is engaged, mine is from the rear though.
More things to look at, sorry

Well I might jack it up and check the bearings, so I can eliminate that if its right. I didn't do it before the lift and it still does it with the cdl unlocked. The thing that gets me is that only does it at a certain height from the guard. So it could be the drive shaft as well. It only does it when it has to flex, so I think I can eliminate the CV, I think a CV will keep ticking as you drive along on flat ground.

Another thing I just thought about. Could it be the steering knuckle ball joints, mine have had it and really needs replacing. I will replace them very soon.

Mine has done that since I had it. I just assumed it.......Ticked! you know, one of those Land Rover things!
If, as you say, it is a tick only on suspension movement up and down, it is unlikely to be either a CV joint or a wheel bearing. It could be swivel bearings, but is most likely to be one (or more) of the suspension bushes. If original, most of these comprise two steel tubes separated by the rubber bush. The outer one is a press fit into a hole, but the inner one is clamped between two cheeks by the bolt through the middle. It is supposed to be clamped too tightly to move, but if it is slightly loose, it will move slightly on articulation, giving exactly the sound you describe. It will only get worse, and will damage the cheek pieces as well as the bolt. If there is sufficient wear, just tightening the bolts will not fix it.
Other possibilities, as suggested, are tie rod ends, or possibly loose steering box or pitman arm. Another possibility is a cracked chassis, probably near one of the suspension mounting points.
