Hi all,
After researching lifting my D2 with airbags on the forums I came across a lot of talk about failed uni joints on the front prop shaft, it had me worried so I climbed under disco and had a look, it all looked ok. I thought I'll go and get some prices on having the shaft rebuilt just to be safe. Well tonight I climbed under to remove shaft so I could get a quote tomorrow and still all looked ok until I examined the shaft after removal. I have attached some images to show but I reckon I was pretty lucky, one of the uni's is showing some wear around the edges.
Cheers Matt

Hi
Are these universals greasable? I greased the others recently and could not find any grease points or grubcrews for this joint.

imatt, same I could not see the damage,I could hear it just and a slight vibration
Good catch
No, you have to re install unis with nipples into the dc.

Some good advice on that thread you "linked" to Pedro.
However, I thought a greaseable DC joint would considerably prolong the life of the front prop, but are you are aluding to the fact that with a 2" lift, it may not?
So is the general rule then?
1) If you have a lift (say the popular 2" one) would the advice be to get greasable uni's on the front DC joint.
and/or
2) Regardless of whether the car is lifted or the DC joint is greasable, pay regular close inspection to the DC joint.
and
3) Understand how to lock in the CDL with a spanner (early D2's) so if you do need to remove the prop, you can still get home.
I can do all that,
Thanks
Hi All,
Dropped my prop shaft into universal driveshafts in Melbourne today, they told me that I only need to replace the 3 Uni's and not the ball in the centre of the DC, all up will cost about $320 fitted and balanced. According to them there is only one type of uni available and that it is a greaseable uni, it is a 1300 series apparently the next size down from the more common I believe 1310 which is used in other vehicles. The reason they told me that the uni's fail is due to the angle that they run at (3 degrees is optimal), especially when 4wd's are lifted. My disco is a bog standard V8 auto with airbags in rear and I believe it is sagging at the front, so I wish to give it a lift, so my uni's weren't running at any extreme angles, but they still wore out.

imatt, the air conditioner leaks straight onto the dc joint too, I don't think that's the best for them either
Theirs loads of posts as stated above
