    Disco 2 V8 2003/04 models

    Hi everyone,

I am considering buying a V8 Disco 2. Can you tell me if a 2003/04 model is a good buy? What problems could I expect if any? I am looking at two cars and klm wise both cars are over the 100,000k mark and are priced at just below $20,000. For those ks and that price are they a good buy?

    Thanks,
    Liz

    Hi Liz,
The 2003/04 model D2's are great, they made quite a few tweaks from the earlier D2's to result in a desirable 4wd. I own an earlier D2 V8 and love it, but I have always considered upgrading to the later model because of its CDL, better brakes and great looking headlights to name a few. If you are after a great 4wd the D2 for price is very hard to beat, comfort and features wise there is no comparison. The V8 is an older engine design and does drink a lot of petrol but if converted to sequential gas can be economical to run. The TD5 is more fuel efficient but comes at a larger buy in price. I myself would buy the V8 over the TD5 but budget extra money to convert to sequential gas if you are planning on driving reguarly. My wife enjoys driving my D2 and feels that it is not oversized like a Patrol or Cruiser, and it has a classier image than the others so she tells me. If I was buying again I would look for the lowest mileage example with full service history and I would really twist the salesman's arm (if buying at a car yard) if I was buying a V8, the second hand car market is pretty flat at the moment and you should be able to get a great deal especially on a V8.
    Cheers Matt

    I suppose 100k kms is only 20 a year for 2004,,

still I'd be looking and be prepared to pay a premium for a MUCH lower K car,, for a few extra thou you may get 2 or 3 YEARS less/extra usage.

as said above, V8's, while rare, are much harder to sell.

look all over OZ,, fly and drive home

    east or west?
    north or south Liz?

I have already been looking all over Australia and there isn't much around for the money I want to spend which is $20,000. Most of the cars have huge klms particularly the TD5's.

I already own a Freeelander 2 and love it. It is a TD4. Great car. But I have just started to show dogs and the Freelander isn't big enough to cart the dogs, their cages and my mother and niece. Hence I am looking at a Discovery as it is big enough to carry everything.

Now looking at the V8's for the first time. I have owned V6 cars in the past but never a V8. My brother reckons I am mad!!

So am curious as to how they travel and if it is good money or bad I am spending?

I bet he asks for a drive!

you can expect 550 to 600 on the highway,, they are a great car to drive on a trip.

though around town is anyone's guess,,

but the tradeoff is you will be driving a pretty classy car,
The D2a's are a stunning car to look at, they are very safe, to travel in and to own, I dont think I've ever heard of one being stolen,,

Make sure it has a full service history and get it inspected by an independent Land Rover specialist.

    I would LOVE a D2a,,,,

    Agree with Pedro.
    A poor man/woman pays twice.

You are quoting asking prices not real prices.
Make them a conditional offer of what your budget permits and say its subject toa land rover mech inspection. You fly over to where-ever it is and take a casual drive back.

    Enjoy the journey.

My son has just purchased a 7 seat 2003 D2a TD5 auto with 110,000km & full service history from a reputable dealer with warantee for that sort of price.

I don't plan to fly around Australia looking for a car, would love to, but economically, it isn't a viable thing for me to do. I have a strict budget and can't afford to go over it.

I am a member of RACQ and was going to get them to inspect it. The car yard won't let the car out of their car yard for inspection?

I do like the look of this car and have seen it in real life. It is a very tidy car. I was going to initially offer $18,500 and go from there.

    Any thoughts?
