d2 td5 in VIC at the moment with a problem.

    Hi,

I'm from holland and at the moment i am in VIC with my Discovery td5.
I came from sydney without any problem at all.

Butt on the Great ocean road the car was starting to make a strange noise at approx 80-100 km/p hour. It sounds like a hard bass or something like that.
My first thought was wind deflecting on the roofrack (windcheetah).

I have checked all the wheels and the springs as well.

Does anyone knows what it could be or does somebody knows an adress in Portland/VIC?

    Hope to hear from you.

    Regards,

    Jeroen

Sorry to hear of your issues

others far more experienced than I will diagnose this better ... but have you checked the front drive shaft - Universals?? if loose/damaged thay make a noise ?

There is a reasonable dealer at Millicent "Mac Landrover" they are is approx 70Km past Mt Gambier on way to Adelaide

Mac Ford Millicent, New and Used Cars for sale, incorporating Mac Landrover - 2005 National Ford Dealer of the Year

    hope that helps

    Welcome Jeroen,

Is there any vibration with this sound?

I'd be checking the front prop shaft in particular (probably because I had a DC joint fail). But it could be any uni-joint. The other thing is do you get in decrease in power, like if there was slipping of the clutch (or in the auto)?

Might also pay to post up on LROCV.com.au/forum as there are some Vic guys on there that aren't on this forum who may be able to assist.

    Dm td5 thanks,

You can hear the vib's true whole the car but there is no power decrease at all. It's not the clutch i'm sure about that.

Can i post with the same log in name as Aulro?

Yes as long as the name's not taken.

As for what you've just mentioned. That really sounds like a drive shaft issue and the most likely candidate is the double-cardon joint at the rear of the front shaft. It's not greaseable and given its happening at speed, then is possibly starting to seize. Get it looked at as I (and others) can tell you that when it goes, it can be EXPENSIVE!

If you need parts then RoverParts.com.au are located in Ballarat and would be able to express freight something to a Portland address overnight. The other option for fast delivery would be TriumphRoverSpares.com.au in Adelaide. Both of these guys have been good at getting stuff to me quickly if required.

You might also want to check the rear rubber donut. I had a similar problem coming back from the Simpson Desert last year. Thought it was an unbalanced tyre. Turned out that the donut was flexing due to stress cracks and cause an imbalance, whcih in turn gave a bassy sort of pulsating sound.

Depending on how far you have gotten, Hamilton City Motors, in Hamilton obviously, are a former Land Rover dealer. It is owned and operated by a
Father/Son team, former LR mechanics. Not sure of their parts availability but they know their way around a LR.
