The "Dynamic Duo" - How about S&M ?

    Hi

I've read so many 3 amigo horror stories that I'm seeing my bank manager to set up an overdraft to cover this inevitable? catastrophe.

Meanwhile I seem to have a 'Dynamic Duo' problem with occasional S & M green lights coming up.

This is becoming more frequent and has happened since new. The D2 TD5 is now 5 years/160K Km old. Originally it happened only if you hit an extra hard bump, the TC would whir, the two little green lights would come up and the gearbox would respond like a "Trimatic". Turn off, re-start, jobs right off you go. Never really worried too much as it was a minor annoyance only. Now it is happening more frequently, especially on start and original gear selection to move off. Going in for its 160K dealer service next week.

Disco is aproaching the end of its extended warranty so I'd like to get it sorted, especially if it's going to be something akin to the Global Financial Meltdown.

    Any suggestions.

Well don't know how you went with the good oil, but...if you're lucky it could be an earth problem, if not (and you're getting "odd" things in the LCD display, or even no indication of the gear selected) it'll most likely be the gear position switch.

Not a huge drama, but not real cheap either at between $400-$500 bucks! Bloody nice when it's done though

I have about a 1:1 driveway and it was no fun in "limp" mode.

    Cheers

Quite often is also caused by an "ageing" battery / under performing alternator as the Gearbox ECU is VERY voltage sensitive, and if its "upset", it throws up the Dynamic Duo <----------- I like that!!

Check both battery connections are clean and Tight as well.

    Thankyou all for your help.

I managed to wade through the first 24 pages of post listings last night. Took about 4 hours, there must be an easier way . Though it's easy to be distacted when you come across an interssting thread.

What is noteworthy is that yes I have noticed that the gear selected indicator sometimes doesn't work or comes on late. I just put this down to a crook lamp selector type switch or something equqlly trivial. Obviously this is not the case, trivial that is.

To sumarise, check battery (8 months old OEM type calcium) and terminals, check earthing under rear cigarette lighter, check and clean connector terminals under aircon drip tube and do something about the selector/inhibitor thingy.

But taking the intermittent nature of the gear selected indicator the gear position switch looks to be the likely culprit is this correct? Is this the 'inhibitor' referred to in an earlier post? and is it something you can pull apart and clean?

    Again, thanks for the info.

    XYZ switch

    Hi Deano

This is a rotary switch down on the side of the auto trans the internals are plastic and when they go the ECU does not know what gear to select. When mine went at 180k the indicator on the dash was showing R when the trans lever was in 2. The "dynamic duo" did come on but I was unable to get reverse gear. The end result was having it towed to the mechanic and picking it up later after parting with $850.

Push the little lever to LOW Then change once you're out of the driveway if this happens again!!!

Vision of sitting on a sand dune in the middle of the Simpson Desert with the gear lever saying 'go' and the Disco saying 'no' . Rang the dealer workshop today and explained the problem. End result, new switch with service on Thursday. Interesting to see if it's covered under extended warranty.

Lol! Good point Tombie, but waiting for the CDL to go in as the exisiting Hi/Low selector is "reluctant" at best!

Good luck Deano, that should solve it for you if it is the inhibitor. Just checked my invoice and as a guide I had mine done 12 months ago for about $480 installed.
