    Slooow indicator flash

we've had a few cold mornings here in the deep south and I've noticed that there's a bit of a delay between flicking the indicator on and it actually starting to flash - seems to be OK when things have warmed up a bit - seems like the relay might be a bit slow when cold - could be on the way out?

Is this replaceable? looking at RAVE seems to suggest it might be a little more complicated than that (read $$$)

Hopefully someone else has been through this process

    cheers, Andy

Yes I've just been through this process. Exactly the same symptoms.

It will poor electrical connections on the indicator assembly. The colder it gets the longer the delay.

I replaced mine with a second hand unit which cost about $180 including fitting. Apparently it is a bit fiddly but if you know what you're doing there is a technique. That's why I left it to someone else.

This is not an uncommon issue.

Thought it sounded a bit familiar. Mine is OK on the indicators, but the windscreen wipers do almost exactly as you are saying. In cold weather or after they have not been used for a long time (nothing unusual in Kal), the wipers will not come on when you turn the switch on the first two or three times. After turning the switch on & off a few times, they come good and then continue to work without problem. This only applies to the main switch for the wipers - if I just give the stalk a quick flick for a single pass, they work fine.

Have always assumed that the cause is dirty or worn contacts in the switch. The problem does not seem to be getting any worse (has been doing this for at least a couple of years now) so I haven't bothered doing anything about it.
    Cheers .........

    Thanks heaps,

Just to clarify, by indicator assembly do you mean the stalk switch on the steering column or the relay assembly which is hidden somewhere behind the drivers side fuse box?

This is an old problem that normally is caused by the lubricant on the contacts getting very thick which makes for bad contact when cold. Take the switch apart and clean off the lubricant and all will be fine.

    Andy,

Yes it is the indicator stalk assembly at the steering wheel. I initially thought it was the relay too, but not so.

Cleaning it sounds like a good idea as posted by Graeme, I just didnt have the time to figure it out and the cost seemed insignificant as I was getting the Head Gaskets replaced at the same time

Thanks Graeme, will give that a go

I guess $180 does pale into insignificance when you've got a head gasket to worry about Hopefully there is no strange link between the dark lord Lucas and head gaskets

    Thanks for your help

Just need to remove the covers then a couple of screws holding the switch in place. I can't remember how the switch disassembles as I did mine a couple of years ago, but the job didn't take long.
