    D2 Tyres, again!

Ok, the old man is replacing the tyres on his D2.

Standard rims with 235/70R16 and original tyres (long dead).

Looking at AT's in the standard size, there isn't a lot, but what else of a near size fits well. 235/75R16 are far more available, but how well do they fit?

options in the standard size are as below.

    Yokohama has the A/T-S

Toyo has the OPAT (Open Country All Terrain)

    Federal has the Couragia AT

    Maxxis have the MA-751

Goodyear have the wrangler silent armour
    http://www.goodyear.com.au/TyreDetailAction.do?website=GYR&websegmentcode=RV& mtpcode=00386&from=nPerPage

    Cooper have the ATR

    cooper also have the ST

    Bridgestone have the

BF Goodrich have the All Terrain TA

Of those the BFG TA, Cooper ST or OPAT are probably the better options, but we've not looked at price yet.

What about Pirelli Scorpion ATR 235/70r16 - $260 each fitted in Canberra which is probably 30% dearer than anywhere else in the country. also complies with the load rating of 105 & speed rating of 'T' which a lot of the others don't. I have BFG AT's at the moment - they have done 80000 klms but no 4WD with good tread left, they are 4.5 years old & have gone hard & totally danerous in slightly wet conditions. BFG at's only have a load rating of 104.

I looked also at Bridgestone D698 (I think thats the number) ---- no - 694

I had the OPATs - didn't like them. Poor tread life and after 12 months I swapped them for the BFG A/Ts and they are a far better tyre.

I noticed the other day when I was getting new tyres for my '58 series II, BFG have a special on. Bit of a gimmick I suppose, but if you buy 4 BFG's you get a free Bushman portable compressor...

Looking at other threads, coopers seem to be the way no to go, so strike that.

BFG was the main direction I was going to point him in now.

on the size issue, 235/75R16 only seem slightly larger (about 3%), so I presume they will be fine (all 5 being changed). I wonder if there are more available in that size?

I've very recently fitted Pirelli Scorpion ATR in LT245/70-16 for $240 ea. They are more than just OK on sloppy tracks and the speedo reads the same as my GPS. Too soon to know if I'd buy them again but their ride isn't nearly as harsh as the LT225/75-16 Silent Armours got to be that they replaced.
