    Thumbs up My 1st oil & filters change

    2.5hrs ... with a LOT of dicking around trying to remove the blasted spin on oil filter ... crush marks show it was tightened with an oil filter wrench (by a Gorilla at Trivetts according to the windscreen sticker) ... getting the new one on was pretty simple, but tightened by hand only.

    How do you guys get the oil filter off ?? My wrench wouldn't fit squarley around the filter due to some bolts/nuts between the filter and block. (is there a special/smaller/thinner strapped wrench to make this a bit easier ??) Fitting it askew kind of gave a partial grip, and I was able to turn it maybe 1-2mm each movement ... then spend 5min's trying to get it to grip again ... grrrr ... I could just get my arm & hand squeezed in next to the exh' manifold and get a grip on the filter either around the filter, or under, but there was not a hope of gripping it tight enough, or having room to twist my arm to turn it ... was too bloody tight anyway !! RAVE says take of the engine acoustic cover (why ?? did that, didn't help. Couldn't take the turbo heatshield off as I don't own an 8mm socket to get to the rear bolt inside the sheild ... that all seemed like a waste of time).

    Once I did get it unscrewed, I managed to lower and remove the filter upwards without loosing ANY oil !! Hows that! No plastic bag. I did the filter last, after dropping the oil, then changing the cent' filter ... and when I removed the spin-on filter it was 5/6th full ... so nothing to spill .... ??

    Changed my oil to the Penrite SIN Diesel 5w-40 ... ordered a 20L of HPR Diesel5 and they got the SIN stuff in by mistake ... hmmm .... $166 for 12L, so it wasn't that much more expensive than the HPR and I guess it's worth the extra (cold starts / short runs) ... certainly made a differnce to the noise the engine makes ... has smoothed it out enourmously ... but the oil I dropped was probably a bit old & tired I suspect (Mobil 1)

    Air filters a doddle, and so is the fuel filter ... my D2a doesn't have the water drain alarm conected, and the new fuel filter came with a white plastic drain plug ... I put the genuine drain back on, and the new white drain into the toolkit in the back door (just incase!). Cycled the ign' on 30sec's / off 5 secs for 5x times, and it started right up no hassles ... I'm enjoying this already !

    Then we went to Barrington Tops to play in the snow. What fun !

    So there you have it ... ATF fluid this weekend

    When I was looking to buy, I checked out a car with a remotely located oil filter (on the fire wall) and thought it seemed a bit of a suspect thing to do and walked away...

    Since doing the same thing as you I now understand why they did it

    The main TD5 oil filters are known to come loose and weep, thats why it was probably done up with a wrench. Hand tight is the "correct" way, but keep an eye on it, as you may have to periodically re-tighten it. I now knip mine up with oil filter pliers when I do mine as it did come loose once.

    You didn't spill oil because you removed the filter with an empty sump, something that should be avoided especially on a diesel as it takes longer to get oil pressure on startup. RAVE specifically advises against this practice.

    Well done Kev

    Its all nice and easy. Once you get to know how to spin the filter off and set it to your tightness it all becomes very simple to do.

    I have never had a filter spin off and I just use my hands...no tools required.

    With the money save by not going to the workshops you can now replace all the oils & filters with the best.

    With the auto....try Transmax Z. Its very good. Change your filter too. Just remember this still holds heaps of fluid even though you have drained the pan. The auto smoothness is measurable.

    I've made a simple tool that makes oil filter removal on the TD5 easy.

    Basically a length of steel square tubing, about 750mm long, with 5/8 inch inside dimension (fits on a 5/8 socket drive) with a length of webbing / strap bolted to the other end in a loop (ends together in a "teardrop" shape). From under the vehicle, slide the tool up until the loop sits around the filter, & then spin the steel tube by hand in anti-clockwise direction until loop tightens around filter, insert ratchet drive into end of tube and loosen filter.

    Have used this the last couple of oil changes and definitely makes the job easier.

    I understand your frustration with the oil filter. Strap type devices don't work very well if at all, I got an offset "multi-grip" type wrench (marked as "super works"-black with red handles) from Supercheap and it works without the need to remove the engine cover or turbo shield. (see attached photo)

    I ended up buying an el-cheapo strap wrench and attacked it with a bench grinder. The strap needed to be thinned down about 3/8's in a couple of areas and now I can just squeeze it on.

    Dunno how you're trying to use a strap type tool mate - but some of us do it all the time without any problem. Takes me a matter of seconds to loosen the filter on mine to the point where I can then remove by hand.
