    Under body knock on 02....

Hi all. Its a thumpy (not tinny) underbody knock over bumps in the road...sounds like an exhaust hitting or broken shock like sound, but underneath the exhaust is all hooked up like a bought one and shaking it doesnt cause noise and I cannot see any broken shocks (those are only 3-4 months old). It handles and rides like it has no broken shocks anyway (i know what that feels like from my D1). The front shaft and uni are fine.

The wheel nuts are tight, but it doesnt sound like that anyway.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

Dunno if this will help, had a noise on a D2 & it turned out that the front springs had sagged & was hitting the front bump stops on large bumps,& the bump stops were loose, causing the noise.

The other noise i had a while ago was the exhaust hitting the auto, after a trip to ormeau.I loosened the joint & it sprung back into place. This probably isnt your problem as you have checked the exhaust.

Cracked brake backing plates also get noisy, but is more of a rattle.

ACE body bushes will do it if there is slop in them. You can duplicate this by swerving from side to side. Also check the watts linkage rocker bushes at the rear.

Cracked body mount behind the front PS wheel will do it. It will crack through the hole that the bolt pass through. You will notice this when hitting bumps that twists the car but with the absence of swrving knocks. You will feel this one also.

Shocks can do it if the crush tubes and/or the bolts wear allowing slop to develop.

Mine just did this today going up Mt Buller - soft 'clunk' when turning from one direction to the other. On the way home to Melbourne I got the ACE amber warning light on... will look at the bushes in the morning.

Check that the bolts holding the front swaybar on are tight. When loose, they can produce a clunking sound from time to time.

Normally more assciated with vibration but can also produce the odd clunk, check the rear driveshaft nuts for tightness - they do come loose and require periodic tightening.

    Cheers,

    Franz
