Hi Hendrik
If a QLD reg (similar process for other states) vehicle is modified outside the STD regulations it must be inspected and approved. This process will be different depending on the type of modification and may involve testing and/or engineer inspections/test.
If the mod is approved they will fix a Vehicle Modification Plate (it’s Blue in colour hence the term) next to the compliance plate and record the details on their mainframe system.
I've not looked at getting tyres approved so I'm not sure how many hoops would need to be negotiated.
As another example – fitted a long range tank to the D2 and all that was required was a certificate from the tank manufacturer and filling out a form at QT – they then fitted the blue plate with the Modification code. As we said at the time, if the car catches fire and the tank is not approved we're on our own…
Ask your insurance co if they would like a reason not to pay after a big accident … Ask the coroner if he would like to make recommendations after a fatality – this is why a lot of tyre retailers will not fit the sizes that we are talking about - the larger the diameter of the tyre the less affective the brakes are - and your kidding if you think the accident investigation team is silly enough not to notice....
Only reason I think of this issue is because one of my Brother-In-Laws works for one of Aus largest insurance companies in a team that’s sole purpose is to find evidence that will allow the company to deny the claim. And let me assure you that I am absolutely gob-smacked with what they do – best one is Jet skis that are damaged during road transport. "Can we inspect the securing device that was fitted on the rear of the jet ski when it came off the trailer?" "What – you didn’t have one – I’m sorry too bad". And yes he mentions tyres, too big, too small & too wide...
