    big tyres, td5

    hi all,
i am after some opinions from those running the larger tyres on your d2 td5's and how the overall driving experience is now compared to standard size.
considering 235/85 or 265/75 but trying to get a feel for how the around town stuff will be effected, pretty sure i will be impressed by the offroad side of things.
look forward to hearing your thoughts before i take the next step.
    cheers

Yorkie is yours a manual or auto? I think this makes a big difference if you don't regear.

Edit.... Ah, manual as in your sig!

    Hi
I just fitted 265/75/16 MTZ's on my D2. Around town it is not that bad, mine being manual, hill starts are a bit more tricky but other than that around town feels much the same. On the open road, its a bit more challenging. You need to give it a bit more to go up long hills, like build up momentum and drop gears earlier. Overtaking is slightly more challenging as well, but not nearly as bad as I expected. However I will be looking at a chip soon, as on the open road in hilly country it is just too difficult to maintain speed without dropping a gear.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers

    Hi yorkie,

I have recently fitted 235/85r16's to my manual TD5.
I have all the same results as Hendrik, also found it wanders a bit more on rough roads. Hopefully will be cured with a new steering damper.
Haven't noticed any real change in fuel economy like i was warned there would be though.
Offroad i love it, although i went from H/Ts to M/Ts.

Liam, send Ricey a PM. He had bigger tyres on his D2 (manual too I think) & has just gone down a couple of sizes because it killed the gearing.

A lot of people run bigger tyres on their D2's without many problems. While you do notice a change, it won't necessarily kill the gearing, you just need to drive accordingly. It all depends whether you can live with that or not. I don't really use my car everyday, that's why I run my MTZ's all the time, so I can live with it.

    Standard - 245/70x16 (29.5")
    Better - 245/75x16 (30.5")
    Best - 265/75x16 (31.5")

Sorry to be a party pooper – is there any consideration of Legalities? I’m not trying to be the kill joy here but I would think it only fair for people who are encouraging the fitment of illegal tyres to at least inform the enquiring owner of this fact. If you then choose to go ahead than sweet...

The rim diameter may be varied from the standard size
but the overall diameter of the tyre must not vary by
    more than +15mm or -26mm.

The 50mm rule quoted here many times is a national recommendation that is NOT adopted in law by any Australian state – so does not apply as the states have legislated tighter regulations.

Since the D2 is standard with 235/70R16 or 255/65R16 or 255/55R18 under these laws the largest tyre is around the 245/70R16 unless you have the vehicle blue-plated which will include the speedo mod to satisfy the instrumentation rules as well

    Hi Harlie
What does blue modding involve? The speedo can be corrected with a TruSpeed Unit, but what else needs to be done? Is it an expensive exercise?
    Cheers
