i have been told the same thing, and according to the owners manual its true. thats assuming it has the sls airbag rear springs
When we bought our 1999 TD5 we was told that we should not use a Weight Distribution Hitch on it, is this true or was he blowing hot air in my ear.
Cheers,

IIRC the Land Rover towbar isn't strong enough for LDH and you require a Hayman Reece bar to fit them.
search is your friend George,,
lots of opinions and posts,,
my 2 cents,,
if you cant lift the drawbar its too heavy,
if it sways, FOR WHATEVER REASON its built/loaded wrong.

I have always used HR WDH mainly on cars and for 2 years on my D2 TD5
I use a light setting ( 5 links on the chains )and have installed Polyair springs and run them about 17 psi depending on the ball weight of what I am towing. Cheers George
I understood that the issue was not the towbar strength but confusing the SLS system. However my D2 has coils, but the owners manual doesn't specify that the prohibition only applies to SLS equipped vehicles.
Having removed and refitted the tow bar on mine I can't believe that anything less than the QE2 would overstress it!
I tow a 2.5 tonne van, and the D2 handles it well without the need for a WDH. However it is much smoother and therefore a much more pleasant and comfortable experience towing it with a WDH fitted. It smoothes out the pitching (vertical movement) and makes the whole rig feel and handle much better.
The hammering that results from using the factory tow system without a WDH appears to me to be far more likely to fatigue and break the system than using a WDH which prevents that hammering.
Having driven the rig both with and without the WDH, I have no hesitation in saying that it is safer with the WDH, but the manual still says don't do it.
pretty sure that relates only to the sls
I've always understood that the standard LR towbar was designed for towing horse floats to Ascot and would not put up with the twisting force applied by a WDH (which has been known to break towbars not designed for it). Remember that WDHs are not used in Europe as their caravans are much lighter.
Having said that, my BIL towed a 16ft pop-top for a couple of years with a standard D2 towbar and WDH, but when he bought a new 22ft van he upgraded the towbar.
Stephen.
Ive seen a 2litre front wheel drive towing two Gee Gees in the UK. It was doing the job, but it made me wonder about the standards are over there.
