    2 x unattached wires at Auto - D2a

Whilst doing an auto filter and fluid change I noticed 2 x loose unattached wires at the upper left rear of the auto trans' .... about where the back of the auto pan / LHS gearbox mount is.

The 2 x single wires (green + black/green) have an insulated f/male spade connector on the ends. These go into a soft/flexi black plastic tube/conduit, that appears to be taped to 2x other hard conduit's carrying the auto box wiring looms.

These 2x wires were just floating around loose above the gearbox mount, are covered in dirt/dust, and don't appear to have been connected to any place I can see/find ...

I've looked through Rave & the wiring diagrams but haven't been able to find any positive leads other than a reference to removing the "2 x Lucars" from the auto transmission with an accompanying picture that resemble the spade lugs ... ??

Anybody got any ideas or suggestions as to what these wires are for and where do they attach ??

    Thanks.

Without confirming with the wiring diagram, I expect them to be for the transfer case high temperature switch that's fitted to some vehicles. By connecting them together the transmission high temperature warning light on the RHS of the instrument cluster should be illuminated. Black with a coloured tracer is usually a sensor/switch return earth on these vehicles.

I fitted the omitted switch to mine.

Edit: Yep, just confirmed. Green/black provides the earth path for the transmisison oil temperature warning light.

Thanks Graeme & Rosscoe. Very much appreciated. There's always a certain level of panic sets in when one finds loose unconnected wires in the car and you're not sure what they're for or where they are supposed to go !

So, the Auto transmission over-temperature sensor was never installed in the D2 TD5, but was in the V8 ... go figure !?

I'll check by shorting the 2x wires and confirm the temp light on the dash ... just for interest/knowledges sake.

Graeme, was there much effort / cost involved in sourcing & fitting the said omitted sensor ? ... and, for a std unchipped auto td5 is it really required ?? (I don't tow, but live at Stockton Beach, so there's going to be plenty of light/medium duty sand/beach driving in the disco's future ... nothing extreme)

    Thanks again!

My MY99 Td5 definitely had the auto over temp. light connected as it came on more than once in hard sand work on hot days.

As said on one of the other posts is it the Transfer box high temp light that was not connected.

Or was it that the auto box O/T light was not connected on later models.
I will have to check my MY04 tomorrow,as i have never seen it on.

Thanks Paul ... there's no mention of a tr'f case over temp' light I can find in the owners manual ... Graeme mentions the dash light on the rhs of the instrument cluster ... I assume he means the auto over-temp' light (on the rhs).

Maybe it's just like the deisel fuel drain/water warning light isn't connected ... the sender's still screwed into the bottom of the filter, but there's no wiring ... but I think I've spied the end of the loom & plug tucked up under the chassis ... the later facelift models appear to have had some of the "features" disabled ... ?

    Kev..

I would agree it for the transfer box High oil temp circuit.

As far as I know, no TD5's had them, ALL NAS V8's have them fitted maybe the AUS V8's do to ?

Its connected to the same light as the Autobox oil overtemp light, so when one of the sensors packs up (as they do) you have to try and work out which one it is as they are not the same sensor (good idea Land Rover.......not) lol
