Worth checking that the harmonic balancer and the fan hub are intact.
Sounds like glass marbles in a kitchen blender! Happens very infrequently and intermittently, only on start-up. Will disappear on re-start and sometimes if revs varied mildly.
Any ideas?

My D2 TD5 hd similar noises after a several weeks trip through red dust and some water . It was the Viscous hub bearing and also the serpentine belt tensioner bearing . Cheers George
We had a similar thing with our 2001 td5 and about a month later the idler pulley seized and all the rubber was missing from the harmonic balaner, the end result was found only when the car wouldnt start.
I have also been told that a similar noise happens when the exhaust manifold warps.Hope this helps..
Cheers Ean
Thanks for the input so far. A new harmonic balancer was fitted in March this year so I guess we rule thye HB out.
It took me ages to pinpoint the noise in my td5 because it was intermitent.
When I took the Viscous fan off (with home made spanner) then undid the 3 bolts and took the drive hub off and rotated the centre It was evident the bearing was cactus
Good luck George
Check the heat shield on the catalytic converter. They come loose and rattle. Just take it off.

also check the turbo heat shield and get the fault codes read you might have an intermittant harness fault as caused by oil in the harness.
check the engine side of the harness by disconnecting the plug at the front right of the engine on the underside of the rocker cover and the ECU side. If youve got it it wont be the soul cause but it will be causing the engine to run rough and that makes other things that dont normally shake and mess around to do so.
best of luck with it.

Mate I've got this same noise in my '99 TD5. Bit of a rev after cold start and all is good... or goes away by itself once vehicle has actually gotten underway which can be done without inducing this noise. Have also noticed some different temperature readings.... am leaning towards a viscous fan issue which I will be checking.
Happy hunting.
