Purchase advice: new to disco- V8 vs TD5

    Hi,
Had the opportunity to drive Melb to Sydney in a S1 Diesel Disco a few years ago and enjoyed but for the under powered 4cyl. Need a new vehicle, moving to desert in WA.

    Spend around $15000
Need advice on issues to look for in Disco S2 models up to 200,00kms. Year range 1999- 2002.
How does the V8 go on gas?

Most use will be long haul bitumen although hankering to get the canning stock route under my belt and will be 100km's from southern start point......

    Thanks

I run both a Tdi D1 and V8 RRC. Luv em both. If you search this site you will find lots of different views about Td5's versus V8's on gas and how well each are suited to remote locations. For my 2 cents worth.. If I'm not towing, I'd choose my Tdi simply because of the 1400km range (112lt tank). If I was towing I'd take the V8 with as many jerry cans as I carry to extend the range, because you cannot guarrantee that service stations in remote area's (in general) have LPG all the time (if your relying on petrol&LPG for range).

I drive a V8 on sequential LPG vapour injection. I would highly recommend you avoid LPG on a V8. The cylinder liners can slip when the engine is running hot on LPG. Once a cylinder liner slips, it's time to get a new block and you don't get much change from $8K.

Just get the TD5 and if you can drive a manual, get the manual, as it has less NVH.

    Hope this helps! :-)

My neighbour and I both have Disco2s. We both pull caravans. He has a TD5 auto, I have a 4.6 litre V8 auto. Both are great. His is noisy compared with mine, but his in standard form has a far greater range which is important in remote areas. I have had to instal Long Ranger long range tanks (163 litres) to get a decent range, particularly with the van. He gets a decent range without the larger tanks. There is a cost penalty with having to fit bigger tanks and keep them filled. The torque of his TD5 is better for pulling the van because it is available at low revs where you need them, whereas my 4.6 has enough torque, but at relatively high revs.

There was a thread recently on another forum about travellers stuck at an outback servo waiting for some days for a resupply of gas. If you are going to be living in a remote area I would be wary of going the gas route.

Overall it is horses for courses. I love my V8 (apart from the slipped liners which cost me a bomb and could have been dangerous in a remote area).

In your shoes, I would be probably go the TD5 route for the range, ready availability of diesel, and low down torque.

Love my TD5, Son has one too. Smooth, great economy plenty of grunt. (more if you get a chip)
I cannot compare to a same model V8, as I havent driven the V8D2, but my earlier carby V8 Rangie couldnt campare engine wise and wouldnt consider a V8 option.
    cheers

    V8 v TD5

I have a D2 TD5 and a RRC 3.5. The v8 really only wins for tooling around town where it is quiet and smooth. On the highway they are very similar for NVH but the TD5 returns almost 10 km per litre when the v8 might return 7km per litre. Other advantages of the diesel:
less starting problems - no buggering about with coils, plugs, points, etc
greater range - less messing about with jerry cans
runs cooler - less fire risk in grassland.
Test drive a TD5 and you should be amazed at how much go it has around town (much better than TDi).

That is why I also went for the V8, plus I have leased it for 3 years so instead of paying tax to the ATO, I am using pretax dollars to pay for the fuel.

    Interesting observation Pedro....

I wonder what the percentages are if you compare number of TD5 owners against the number V8 Owners on the forum and see how that stacks against the problem posts... I wonder if it's actually proportional.

I know when I had my V8 Disco II.... in LROCV I was certainly in the minority.

Both have their issues.... It would be intersting to hear from someone who works on them every day... as to which they feel are more prone to problems.

I dont mean this as V8 vs TD5 btw.... I would be genuinely interested.

    Cheers, Mark
