Sand driving is generally in High range but throw diff lock in too.
Anywhere traction is likely to be lost, use the centre diff lock.
Hey guys, just wondering if you could set me straight on a couple of transfer case situations.
The transfer case in my TD5 (auto) is currently levered into the bottom right have corner of the transfer case (high). Ok, can someone give me a quick run down of what that gear exactly is?
I;m just trying to get an understanding of the H pattern and what the gears are good for. Above it is (low) then you have the lock which is over to the left and up and down.
Scenario: I need to cross some sand areas on Stockton beach in NSW to get down to the water, it can get soft from time to time, but is usually ok. Is the current gear selection of bottom right (high) sufficient enough to tackle this? or is it preferred to be in lock when engaging sand.

Ok perfect, probably would have been the default conclusion, but I wanted to make sure. So what are the two (unlocked) transfer case gears best used for?
Captcav
Unlocked is best for road use. High traction means that you'll need slippage between front & rear diffs which is what the centre diff is for. Have it locked & you'll stress the driveline.
99.9% of the time you'll use High/unlocked on the road.
If you're doing a bit of slow work (like reversing a trailer), the Low/unlocked position is handy.

Perfect, thanks for the clarification.

make sure its locked in before you get to the soft sand.
