Ok - I have all the symptons that Fenian mentioned. I have been trying to find this annoying whistle for months.
I have a noticeable vibration that can be felt thoughout the car and if I back off or stamp on the accelerator quickly, I get the clunk.

What do I look for on the propshaft to see if its about to fail?
Anyone got any thoughts on who in Sydney they could recommend for a repair. Im in Sutherland.

I second that! I'm in sutho too. Craig the only place i can think of is TR Spares in Padstow, they've done some nice work on my car and were prett easy on price. I can give you contact names and numbers if you like.

But i'd like to know what i'm looking for on the propshaft to get an idea before "FAIL"

The front prop shafts fail because the double uni joint at the transfer case end is not serviceable (cannot be greased). That's where the shaft fails.

You need to check for any movement in these 2 universals & also for signs of wear. Wear can be indicated by any shiny spots or any rust stains coming out of the universal cups (inside the joint usually).
Grab the shaft tube section near the joints & try moving it up/down & side to side. Also use one hand on the shaft & another on the flange & see if you can feel any movement between both. If you can, you have wear in the universal joints.

Thankyou Scott. Exactly what I was after.

Captcav - yeah I know Scott down at TR Spares at Padstow, I also highly recommend them. If you need somebody closer, Peter Davis (RovingMechanical) is also excellent and he lives in Barden Ridge.

    Hi Craig

I had the same symptoms as you recently in my D2 and the problem was a badly worn front diff. The LR mechanic was dumbfounded as, in his words, they're usually bullet proof. Replaced with a second hand unit and now all is good.

    Cheers

Thanks Frank. Mine is going in next week for a few little jobs. Mechanic is going to examine and test everything out. Hoping for a cheap getaway.

    P.S. Welcome Frank.
