    Land Rover Discovery II V8

Hi I am looking at buying a v8 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II, I don't mind if its an auto or manual. My question is which is more reliable (auto or manual assuming they have been looked after, serviced etc) or are there any inherent problems with either, making you choose one over the other?
    Thanks

one over the other being v8 vs. td5 or D2 vs. D1?

I think this question would also be best asked in the Discovery section

Hi, I thought it was obvious as I said "I don't mind if its an auto or manual", so what I'm asking is which is best, an auto or manual in a V8 D2. I have no preference and would like to know which is more reliable and whether there is any inherent problems with either. I don't know how to move it to the discovery section, Thanks for moving it. Cheers

Auto is best if you don't want to change gears.
Seriously though, the auto will give less worries overall as there have been long term manual gearbox woes, mainly if a lot of 4x4 work or towing involved. Each have thier merits, but I'm thinking a manual is not common, probably 9 out of 10 sold are auto's so your choices are broadened. Finding a manual with other features you want wont be easy.
Auto will use more petrol though.

Thanks for the quick replies looks like the auto then, on a side note were there any different v8's in a series 2 Discovery and if there were what were the differences and which one is the best.
I am new to these (only ever owned the old series 2/3 landy's back in the day) since then it has been patrols, cruiser's etc, although they are probably swear words here .
    Thanks for all the help.
    Cheers Peter

I have a manual 02 V8 and a 95 D1 v8 auto. I love the manual. Its got an extra forward gear I love changing gears manually

In terms of longevity I cant see that there would be much in it. I prefer the manual for towing my 2 tonn Vagabond.

Auto is better in sand, but again if you know what you are doing there isnt much in it.

    Manual gives excellent economy.

In the long term a manual should be cheaper to overhaul.

    Manual is harder to find.

    I have 2003 Auto V8 & love it.

    It's so effortless to drive.

I'm getting about 16l/100km mostly around town.

    Hi
I still have not found a good one as yet and would like to know if there were any differences in the v8's in a series 2 Discovery. And if there were what were the differences and which one is the best, and what about the slipped liners I have been reading about, how common is this and was this fixed by a particular year?
And another question, which years had the better transfer case set up, I remember reading somewhere about centre diff lock or something like that.
    Thanks Peter

The D2a's (think sexy headlights) all had the Hi-comp motor,, so its PULP or nothing,,

and the difference is around 8hp,,

slipped liners is a problem for any alloy engine with liners.

Dont overheat it and no problems,,

how do you tell if ones been overheated??
    you cant.
As with any purchase,, do your homework.

All D2's have the same transfercase,, just some have bits missing. The D2a has all the bits factory built-in.

    The CDL is very important!
It changes the Disco from a one wheel drive to a two wheel drive.
A two wheel drive Disco plus TC is a very competent off road vehicle indeed.

Hi Thanks for that, what years had the CDL then as that will narrow my search down.
    Thanks peter
