I think mounting it on the rear door is a BAD idear In a head on crash it will depart and go through heads on its way to the wind screen. From that mounting point on the door, I could even see it going through a cargo barrier.
Land rover suggest the front passenger foot well, on the side kick panel . Pop rivets are all so a bad idear as they are only soft alloy.

Lucky is all i can say, that I had my extinguisher with me that I recently put in the car. Was travelling up stockton when i came across a Jeep that just burst into flames.

I've heard of Jeeps doing this, but this thing just went up!!!!!!

Mine is mounted on the trans tunnel parallel to the console on the passenger side.
Id rather be able to get my hands on it if stuck and car starting to burn. It happened to me once after a crash and saved my life and saved the remains from burning to the ground.

2nd the projectile comment. A bad accident could see you with greater than 10G deccelleration. That makes your 2.5kg extinguisher a 250kg load on the door structure. The rivnut could handle it but the door sheet structure without any suitable reinforcement wont. But, that is worst case of course.

    Jack Absalom fire extinguisher

Saw a TV documentary where Jack suggested that the best fire extinguisher was a six pack kept in the back...also has other uses.

Whereas my old man used to say that if your vehicle caught fire the best thing to do was throw petrol on it...as you'll always have problems with a fire damaged vehicle. Better to make sure its a write off and not deemed repairable by the insurance company.

I don't have a Disco but can vouch for thinking carefully where to place the extinguisher. I mounted one flimsily on the floor behind the centre cubby in a County 110 and clearly remember the day when it went off in the vehicle.

I gave a mate a lift and when he got out he grabbed his bag and stuff from the rear passenger footwell and in doing so, dragged the powder extinguisher out of its mount and dislodged the safety pin. He then said "Thanks mate" as he slammed the rear left passenger door on the handle of the extinguisher and watched in amazement as I and everything else inside the car disappeared into a thick white cloud.

I then proceeded to burn out a portable vacuum cleaner trying to clean up the mess and I was still finding white powder in the vehicle years later!!

I've got a diesel Defender now so I figure my risk is less than in the old petrol V8 so I'm currently using the 6 pack in the back system.

Mine is mounted on the cargo barrier, top LHS so as to not compromise cargo volume.

My reasoning is that I believe your most potential for a fire is camp cooking etc. The risk of a fire if trapped in the vehicle after a crash is relatively low. Hence I would rather keep it at the back where I am more likely to be cooking and also behind the cargo barrier.

(In my rally car, that is a completely different scenario of course. The extinguishers are mounted on the floor within easy reach of driver and co-driver.)

    Cheers,
