SLS Issues
Hi, I had posted in the tech chatter, but it was suggested I post here in our own D2 forum.
I have a really weird problem with the SLS which is doing my head in!! Over the last few months I have noticed when the back of the vehicle is loaded up or I hitch the van on the SLS deflates and will not rise again once the vehicle starts (I have checked and all doors are closed). I have tried hitching up etc with the engine running when vehicle is at normal height and it still deflates and will not rise to normal level again. I engage the off rode mode switch, it beeps and the warning lamp flashes like normal but SLS still doesn’t rise. If I unload or unhitch to reduce weight it still doesn’t rise. I do notice the RH side is down on the bump stop and LH side is about a third to half the way up.
The weird thing is if I leave it for a while (maybe an hour or so) and try again it usually corrects itself and comes back up, even under load.
I have been reading the RAVE cd trying to figure it out but I am stumped. I have done some basic checks, removed and cleaned rear height sensors, checked air bags (no leaks), compressor is ok, relay & fuses look ok. Under normal driving situations without load I never have a problem.
I have a small mod - extensions on the height sensors to increase ride height by about 25 - 30 mm and I did replace shocks about 10 months ago, but don’t think it is related.
Any ideas?
Does anyone know how to override or bypass the SLABS ECU to manually control the SLS? I was thinking of a switch between the SLABS and relay to manually provide power to compressor.
Cheers
Richard

Hi Richard
If you look at the rave manual it staes that from ride height to extended mode the suspesion raises approx 10mm
If like you mentioned your mod raise to 25-30mm this coun be the problem?
in othe words the sensors reading over the threshold limit.
Try to remove the modification and see how it behaves.
Good Luck

Thanks Vince. I didnt think the small extension I put on the hieght sensor would cause any issue as the ECU should be non the wiser in terms of actual height versus sensor detected height.
Anyway will give it a go an let you know.
Cheers

I don't doubt that you have checked the bags for leaks but by experience I can say that at least 9/10 weird SLS stuff is a bag leaking. You may have the 1/10 that is out of left field but if your bags are more than 6 years old then double check. I have had them behave just as you say. Good luck with sorting it all out.

how about you take your extensions out just to take them out of the equation at the moment. (I have run 30mm extensions and now 55mm with no problems, I have modified air bags for a big lift). I have had a relay switch in the fuse box play up and replaced it, this was because the compressor would not stop, wondering if your relay is faulty and stopping things running? The compressor dumps air when in sleep mode so when you load up things can be on the bump stops, is the compressor starting up straight away when car is started ? Strange it corrects its self later on,

Incorporated within the ECU is a counter which times the operation of the SLS system and prevents the compressor exceeding its duty cycle.
I cant recall exactly but the counter is reset after approx 30 mins if the ignition is turned off, which might explain why turning it off will allow it to pump the rear again?
As far as i know the bags shouldn't deflate due to weight (but that said i have had them deflate when hitting a speed hump hard). Or do you mean the rear just goes down due to the extra weight?
You can bypass the ECU and just run a wire straight from the battery to the compressor to test if the compressor is working and the bags are inflating.
The Rave CD says "If, for any reason, the sensors are replaced, or removed and refitted, a calibration process must be completed to ensure that the SLABS ECU knows the correct height of the vehicle. This process involves using TestBook and a set of special setting blocks (LRT 64-003). The blocks differ from those used on Range Rover."
Also just worth a check... check the nut on the air line going into the top of the airbag is done up tight, this is where mine was leaking. But would only leak when the pressure was high ie: when towing etc.
Let us know how you go,

Thanks guys, some useful info. I know the compressor is working ok I have checked that. Interesting about the nut at the top of the air bag, I will start there as it is only an issue when the rear is under very heavy load and combined with the sensor extensions I have fitted the pressure in the bags may be just that bit too much. It makes sense in theory.
Anyway, between the multiple coolant leaks, SLS playing up, just replaced the oil cooler hose to the transmission (it busted and spewed all over the driveway), oil leaks, fuel leaks, fuel pump, turbo starting to make a strange sound, constant worry about over heating and of course the well known issue with the head gasket - at 225,000km and 9 years of great memories and adventure it may be time to move on, and not to mention the wife is well and truely over it but quite keen on the D3...mmmmm its taken a while but they have grown on me a bit too.
Regards
Richard
