What do I look for ?

    Hi all

Long time watcher ... 1st time poster .... pls be gentle.

I'm looking to buy a series 2 td5 Disco and don't want to spend any more than $20K ..... what am I looking at and what should I be looking for????

I realise that some Disco's had their fair share of issues, what sort of things can I do to protect myself from buying trouble?

Thanks ... and advice greatly appreciated.

    Disco Emu

    firstly Welcome !

I reckon most people on this forum were like me..ie did a little research then bought saw what looked like a nice unit ...then learnt much much more afterwards.
    I was a bit lucky - got a good TD5 at a good price
but I would buy a slightly different one if was buying it now

    mine had no CDL internals
    5 not 7 seats
    no Ace

    but it was...
    chipped
had ARB bullbar, set of great Driving lights, Cargo Barrier, snorkel, 2 spares, good tyres
    low KM's
    Good Service record
    and in great condition

so far so good no issues at all 14months in

my advice check what you really want first ie options, configeration etc
then look for a car that suits
    check condition and service history
recheck condition in detail ( what has been done to it ie Injector looms etc)
    only then look at price
    dont take a chance
lots of info on this site - search away !

    Just a thought or two

    Hi Disco EMU and welcome.

This is excellent advice from NobbyTD5.

I too was a bit lucky and got a good one at a good price.

A good service history is very important.

    Things to watch:
-Oil in ECU injector harness. (pretty easy fix to a updated one)
-ABS, TC and HDC faults. (can be either a small job or a big one depending on the fault)
-Try to get one with the CDL internals (I think the tranfer case number starts with a 4********)
-Older Td5s did have an issue with not having loctite on a bolt in the oil pump which was a potential case for catastrophic failure. Most of these have been dealt with, but it's something of which to be aware.

    All the best

Hi Guys and thanks for the info.

    Couple of things .....

    What's a CDL?
and TC and HDC? and what are they for?

Just a note .... it wont be doing any serious off road work ... towing and beach fishing is about it.

When you say older Td5's do you mean the ones before the 1st facelift? 1999-2000 ????

CDL = Centre Diff Lock on some D2's
TC = Traction Control exists on a D2
HDC = Hill Decent control on all D2's

    cheers

    Hey Disco Emu,

I'm looking for the same thing + auto. Also in Sydney.

Alto Artarmon on Pacific Hwy have an 02MY Discovery II SE, 140,000km for sale, they're talking $20,000 - I'm hoping to haggle them down as I'm not in a rush and they seem keen to sell.

Someone on the forum found out a little about it for me & I'm hoping to get it checked by Graeme Cooper in St Peter's - if it happens I'll let you know the condition.

    Cheers,
    Rick

I understand TD5s can be troublesome and have been told by the LR God JC that 03 2a I think they are known as are the ones to go for...and they are falling in value atm, like most 4wds, selling for around 20k depending on equipment levels. So, that's what I'll be aiming to get, and with a good service history to!!

    Hi Craig, the 1999-2000s.

Get confirmation on this one. But there is a 1999 at work here that went bang and I have heard since that it was common in the first run.
