    Question Dying MAF or ?

    Hi guys,

How do I know if my MAF is dead or dying?

Car and info is a 03MY Td5 bought 2 months ago with 90k on the clock. Hesitation at light throttle, needs more 'foot' than previous to get up hills. Plant the foot and it does respond.
I unplugged the MAF for a test drive and the car felt to be running better.

I've cleaned the MAF myself with contact cleaner and the sensor in the airbox, plus cleaned the sensor in the inlet manifold. Also had the dealer replace the injection loom with lots of oil at the ECU. Cleaned out the plugs at both ends of the engine loom.
Checked the turbo wastegate and it's not stuck but geez they're hard to move

    Any suggestions?

Are EGR and the associated throttle valve still operational? If so, try unplugging the electrical connectors from the modulators although this wont fix a stuck EGR valve.

They are the heart and soul of an engine. My V8 had similar symptoms - more of a slight hesitation just over idle and not zippy any more - reluctant to gain revs quickly at idle...new MAF and wow back in business...immediately difference in response and power.

    Cheers

If the MAF is dead, you probably won't notice it at all on the TD5, the ECU just goes to a default fueling map....so if anything a "slight" increase in MPG and a "little" reduced power when climbing long hills.

Never knew mine was dead till it was hooked up on Autodiagnos.

Only true way is to read the MAF with Nanocom or similar whilst the engine is running and see it actually working.

Thanks UP - I stand corrected - certainly with the V8 my comments apply.

If you have a Nanocom OR can get the car onto a diagnostic tool, the reading should be 500 at 3000RPM

If it isn't it is cactus, try cleaning it first the see how it is before buying a new one

I appreciate this post is related to a MAF on a TD5, but does that reading also apply to the V8, or is it something completely different?
