What should I look for in a 2002 TD5 when buying

    Hi,
I am looking at buying a discovery, I was looking for a v8 but this has come up, its a 2002 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II 02MY SE TD5 auto with 120klms. They say all services have been done, but at 20k intervals this seems a long time to me. when are the big services done, as I will make sure they have been done, and what should I look for on this model.
It was sold by MLR and they have done most of the services.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Cheers Peter

I have been looking for a while, and thought I had found a few good ones but when the close up pics came through or complete service history (with half of it missing) they weren't very good at all.
So I thought I might look at some TD5's as well. (man there is a lot of sh*t out there)

    Hi
The 20k service interval is actually a specified service interval by Land Rover. Unlike the tdi, the td5 has two oil filters, one normal one and a centrafugal oil filter. It is the addition of the centrafugal oil filter that allow for longer service intervals, as the oil is better filtrated.
For the Td5, the usual things to look for are the oil in the injector loom issue, now while I have not had this issue myself (my car has done over 260k), it is a commom problem. Other things you might want to look for are common leak fixes, like the fuel pressure regulator and a coolant leak near the fuel cooler. I'm sure there are others just can't think of them at the moment.

The only real issue is see with the car being a 2002 model is the center difflock, which was taken away in the 2002 model range. While previous models, only had the actuating lever removed, the 2002 has the internal bits in the LT230 transfer case removed as well. This could be a real issue, if you ever want to venture offroad. Now while traction control does the job in most cases, it just feels a lot safer with the center diff engaged.
Some people on here with MY02 D2's have swapped transfer cases from later or earlier models, so that they have CDL.
Not too sure what this costs, maybe someone here can confirm this.

    Hope that helps

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply, it certainly does help, as I thought that the internals were there in the transfer case. I think I will just get the MY03 or the earlier one then. Do you know what year they stooped the center diff lock?
    Thanks Peter

It was removed ( bits in TC case) around may "01" ish, and re introduced as a customer option around mid "03"

NOTE........ LOTS of the faclift vehicles have the sticker on the transfer tunnel showing the CDL instructions as Land Rover only did one sticker and fitted it to them all, with or without a CDL.............Dumb tbh.......

Anyway, make sure you check that the Hi / Lo knob has DIFFLOCK embosed on it, AND the transfer lever sits / leans to the right.......IGNORE the sticker.

The Oz versions of ALL my03/facelifted models have the centre diff lock fitted, including those built late in 2002.
