Modifications / Accessories
- Tyres - Factory size are 235/70R16 (Michelin XPC). Great tyre but no longer available. Michelin have replaced them with the Latitude which is still a Mud Snow (M&S) tyre. I run these on my Ford Escape and they are a very good tyre.
When I replaced tyres on the Disco I fitted Mickey Thompson ATZ in a LT245/75R16 size. This size works very well, gives more sidewall height making bump absorbtion a little better and more protection when airing down. They fill the guard a little more which looks better also. The size is legal. Still a good size for towing. For heavy off-roading then 265/75R16 is probably the largest you can go. They will just fit but to get full articulation without panel rubbing you'll need to fit a 50mm suspension lift.
- Snorkel - Consider this if going anywhere near water especially the beach. DIY fitment was fairly easy but up to you. Safari Snorkel from ARB I think charge around $630 + fit.
- Dual Battery System (DBS) - Recommend a Traxide unit. SC40 for single battery or SC80 for more than one auxillary battery i.e. one in your camper. Electronic unit, very well made, easy DIY installation. Manufacturer is on this site. The D2 has a spot right beside the turbo for fitting a 2nd battery however due to the heat the battery will cook within 12 months - usually. I fitted mine in the right rear bin...works beautifully. As stated in previous post, piece of mind in powering the accessories (fridge, camp lights, computer etc) without draining the start battery.
- Exhaust Gas Reticulation Removal Kit - (EGR) Very worthwhile, just search for it on here. Well worth the $110 delivered.
- CDL Actuator - Very worthwhile but traction control will do the job till you get this fitted. Google Ashcroft Transmissions in the UK. They make an actuator which is similar to the LR factory unit. Expensive but make them send it to you rather than dealing with a local distributor - saves $300+. I have an electronic unit from AMV in Melbourne. Fitted for 18months, nil issues, good unit.
- Firestone/Polyair Airbags - If going for soft long travel suspension or wanting to prop the tail end up till you can afford suspension, then airbags are a cheap alternative. Polyairs are around $360 but if you order Firestone bags from Trucksprings.com in Michigan, USA, you'll have them on your doorstep for about $130AUD.
- Rubber Mats - I bought heavy duty rubber mats from Kmart. Individual fronts (of course) and then a one piece across the back. I bought a cargo mat from ARB, Bushwalker brand I think, about $80 i think. Has about a 4-5" lip around the edge so protects quite well.
- Headlight Upgrade Kit - Again from Traxide, the kit includes new relays, upgraded wiring and a few other things. Search for it on this site, definitely worth doing.
- Cargo Barrier - Don't forget about the AULRO courier service and trying to pick one up cheap off ebay.

I managed to pick up a new Polyair kit for my D2 on eBay for about $280. You will need to decide whether staying at standard height or putting in lift; two different part numbers. Simple to fit and great for towing especially if you want to keep suspension supple for offroad work.
Also for towing, and just because you can, ECU upgrade. Mine is TRS (SA) but there are others. Search on here or contact Tombie on here, I believe.

How easy are they to fit ..... I had them in my last Nissan X-Trail and were fantastic for towing the CT!
or would Bilstein Shocks be a better investment as I don't have ACE or SLS.

Youve already got a snorkel, bar, lights, radio, so your off to a good start. First thing I would do is find out if your oil pump bolt has been checked by the people who have been servicing it as Pedro has already said, and if not TELL them to check it next time they drop the oil out of it.
Then I would do the suspension and ECU upgrade.

About 1.5hrs to fit taking it easy. I didn't drop the springs out, just poked them in with a blunt object, ran the lines over the fuel tank, up the left rear quarter panel and have the valves in the load space. Keeps them clean and neat. I would still fit them with the Bilstein shocks, well at least I will be when I get my new springs and shocks.

Hi, enjoy your car - we have taken our D2 all over the top end many times on some quote ordinary roads - NEVER let us down.
As for maintenance:
* keep up your regular services
have your front tailshaft unis replaced with greasable type - they are only $20 each to buy but fitting can be a bit painfull (see previous posts)
* there is a drain hose for the A/c on the passengers side which drips into the auto selector switch ot the gearbox - lengthen this slightly (see previous posts)
* replace the hard plastic / brittle hose from the radiator fill bottle to the radiator with a more pliable hose.
As for the dual batteries - this is really an issue if you go camping and run a fridge in your vehicle.

Yeah tyres would be a good idea, I have Pirelli Scorpion ATR LTs I reckon they're great on-road, haven't tried them off road yet but I've read good reports.
CDL would be useful, specially on sand.
