    Tyre sizes

Ok, its another "what you got" post (sorry)

Just bought some 16" rims to get some "bigger" tyres on for when the truck is lifted as the sizes for the 18"'s are quite limited........so.........

Im thinking (with a 2" lift)

    245/75/16 OR 265/75/16

Pro's and con's for either, obviously cost is a factor, but dont mind paying more to it right first time. SO what ya got guys ? and any other mods needed for them ?

    Cheers

UP - I run 245/75/16 - Maxis Bravo AT (their aggressive AT pattern not their woosy one)...they dont scrub and go very very well. I did have 265/70/16's and they were excellent in deep sand, but my bet is the Maxis will be better because of the higher profile and thinner but not too thin (lets face it stock was 235/70).

I cant go taller at the moment without a lift. I may get a one inch lift at some stage because my rear springs are starting to get a little tired from the 2 tonn boat and having an extra 90kg in the back all the time from the LPG.

    Cheers

Hi UP, at the moment I have 265/75/16s, they rub a bit at full lock on the some parts of the inner guard, they will drag some power from the car too, with a 2" lift I think the 265/70 would be a better option if you want a bigger tyre and a tad more width over the 245/75.

    265/75/16 = 31.6"

    265/70/16 = 30.6"

    245/75/16 = 30.5"

Not only is the 265/75 bigger, it is 1kg (2.2lb) per tyre heavier which means more rolling resistance, which is a killer in a manual, probably not too much of a problem in an auto.

A good size is 235/85/16, if you want taller tyres, these don't rub even though they are the same rolling diameter as the 265/75, they are a narrow tyre though, but they are 1kg (2.2lb) lighter giving less rolling resistance than the 265/75.

G'day UrbanPanzer (love your site and tech tips by the way )
I went for the 235/85r16 as mentioned above. Hankoook RT-03's (my link) after seeing how good they were on Beefy's TD5 D2.

Spread out real nice on sand, great in mud, and excellent on the tracks. Perform very well on the road, and very quiet for a mud tyre.
    JUST LOVE 'EM!!

Didn't mind the "standard" width 235's. As Redback says, no rubbing at all with +2" springs and standard shocks.

    Very impressed so far.....

    Cheers,

One thing I forgot to say is the 235/85 should only be fitted to a 16X7" rim.

You didn't say whether your new rims were 16x7 or 16x8.

265/75/16 Maxis Bighorns here on 16x7s with a 2" lift, haven't had any rubbing issues.

Could see them being a killer on a manual TD5 as has been mentioned since there is a noticable performance hit with them on, but no real issue on my auto v8. What it loses in a bit of acceloration it makes up for in revving lower when cruising.

I was expecting to be swapping between them and my previous A/Ts for on-road use but since the Bighorns are perfectly fine in terms of noise etc too I've just ended up leaving them on the car full time.

Only problems I've noticed are the damn things have a habbit of pulling up the paint on my garage floor, where none of the other cars do. Prob something about the weight of the D2 & the rubber compound. Oh, plus I can no longer get into 90% of carparks due to the height but that's pretty much par for the course really.

I'd fit 265/75-16 and if you need to then just put a washer under the steering stops to prevent any rubbing.
    Cheers
