Upgrade to D3/FL2 or stick with D2?

    Hey All,

just looking for some input - we have a D2 TD5 (00MY) with 220k on the clock. Just about every known problem has been sorted (headlining, loom, double cardan, fuel pump, fan bearing, starter motor and exhaust studs) except for the rear airbags - they are to be done soon. We really love the disco, my wife particularly likes the seating and the ride height for seeing over traffic here in Sydney. The car has also had a brand new roof, bonnet and door-skins fitted a few years back after hail damage - including a paint-job, so it looks great. Has a nice alloy bar and side steps too.

The car is getting a little long in the tooth though and we've been thinking about shifting to either a FL2 or D3 - have driven both and they are very nice. Given that the D2 is now worth bugger all for trade-in we'd be looking at a substantial investment to upgrade. I'm sure there are others out there that have faced the same dilema - do I spend some cash on the D2 to bring it up to muster (I'm thinking some poly bushes, chip and maybe a bigger intercooler) or do I go over to a later model D3/FL2?

We use the D2 for touring, towing a boat and as a daily driver - off road work is done by the S2A or my Tenere.

I'm just after some opinons, especially from those that may be in the same place as us. What new horrors can I expect as the mileage goes up on the D2? What fresh disasters await me in FL2/D3 world?

    Cheers,

    Adam

I think you need to define you requirements a bit better The FL2 would be a great daily drive in the Sydney traffic but I'm not sure about being a tourer (how many people?) and towing (what).

The D3 does all these things fantasticaly well but there'd be at least 25k+ between an FL2 and the D3. Maybe a 2yo TDV6 D3 would be the go.

Gday Adam, been lookng at the same (not the FL2) but a defender or d3
I guess the thing is are you buying new or 2nd hand. With D4 coming woulkd expect a D3 runout sale (maybe), but if buying 2nd hand, unless low ks, then the D2 with all the main probs sorted starts to look good.
We decided to keep the D2 and will proberly buy the wife a daily driver and use the D2 for trips/touring.
My reasoning is this I have got to know the D2 and learnt to do alot of the jobs myself ( with the great help from all on this forum), and I am not the lucky type that could buy 2nd hand and have a trouble free run, wouldn't matter what type or brand car it is..
Thats my 2 cents worth, Goodluck with which ever way you go.
    Cheers Ean

It really comes down to $$$$$

If you can afford it, the D3 is an amazing car and soooo much more user friendly and practical than the D2. If it was me, I'd probably look at swapping the D2 for a D3.

As for the FL2... If you're towing, I'd probably still be looking at the D3 (but it depends on the size of boat and how much you need to carry when touring).

Mind you... You could always 'push the boat out' and splash out on a D4??? All of the new features around tow assist, etc... and the extra power from the engine make it an excellent tow car.

Thanks for the replies so far. I should have pointed out that at the moment we have a trailer-sailer that we tow with the D2 - however that is getting sold soon and we wont have the towing need anymore (hence why the FL2 is in the mix).

    Cheers,
