    Parking manual D2 in gear

    Hey,

Parked my MY03 Disco in 1st gear in a steepish car space yesterday.

Without applying the handbrake I released the clutch to find that the Disco held itself momentarily before it repeatedly released, moved then held and so on down the car space.

Now I am not mechanically minded but is this 'normal' or do I have another issue to attend to?

How steep was the driveway?? Its sounds like the car was pushing through engine compression. My mate had an old 202 holden ute that used to do this on anything steeper than a wheelchair ramp but it did have half a bagillion K's on it!!

By the sound of it, the weight of the car on the steep slope was cranking the engine (not uncommon)??

I suspect that using the handbrake would probably help in this situation. Either that and/or slipping it into low range...

The public car space was steep. Certainly wouldn't comply today with the Building Code of Australia or disabled codes.

    correct thats normal...

the compression and friction of the engine was not enough to hold it on the hill

as the compression leaked down the piston went up and the car moved forwards till the next cylinder came up on compression the car slowed down and the cycle repeated.

LR handbrakes not being the best its a good idea to park the manuals in gear (make sure the fuel cut out is in the off position) with the hand brake on. picking low range with difflock in is an even better Idea as it ensures that A, the tcase and CDL still work and B increases the mechanical advantage to the engine to hold everything.
