Its noisey at idle but much more prounounced as you take off and with normal town driving the knock is very prounounced I have had many diesels over my life and have never found one so noisey I have heard quieter old trucks
The TD5 is noisier at and just above idle if the EGR system is not operational, eg it may have been removed (getting more common) or just disconnected. It is noisier when cold until the coolant temp sensor signals it's warmed-up and the ecu changes its operating parameters. If the MAF is not functional (disconnected or not operational due to such things as a blown fuse from a shorted wiring harness across the front of the engine) then the engine can be noisy up to at least 1800 rpm.

This might sound silly and not very technical...but are all the bolts present and tight on the acoustic shell?
I had a missing and now a loose one (must fix that) and you'd be amazed the difference it can make...
