D2 V8 Auto, Brakes wont hold when reversing down hill!!

    Morning everyone,

I just wanted to know if anyone could explain or has had this problem with their D2.

On the weekend when reversing down the grass slope and then concrete driveway at my house with disco in reverse, I could not get the car to stop on the slope with the brakes.

I had the brake pressed as far as it would go with the brakes making a grabbing / sliding noise while still going backwards. The driveway is relatively steep, about 1 in 2 gradient with the grass beside being about the same.

Could this have been the traction control trying to stop wheels sliding on the grass section?

If it is the traction control, how would this go offroad?? I do not particularly want to be trying to reverse down a slope for whatever reason and not be able to stop the car, it does not move quickly, but still enough to fall into a hole or of a ledge.

Either way, I am getting the brakes etc. checked out by Rockhampton Land Rover tomorrow just to be sure.

    Regards,

    CJT

I'm no expert, and you'll have to wait for others on this site for a definitive answer, but wasn't this the safety issue that resulted in re-birth of the CDL in post 2002 models?
    Perhaps not!

If it was making a kind of rattling/buzzing/vibrating noise and the pedal was vibrating at the time i'd say it was the ABS doing its thing and stopping the wheels from locking up.

As I admitted previously, I am no expert but I will have a go anyway.

Having had another think about this, if all four wheels are locked up and the vehicle is still moving, no traction control will stop gravity from doing its job, until at least one wheel regains traction.

The TC will only apply more braking (than you are already applying)automatically, if one wheel is spinning faster than the rest.

I agree with ariddell that the TC is working correctly, but the only way to improve braking in this case, is to have tyres with better grip.

I will sit back now ready to be shot down in flames

    Biggin,

In this case it would be the ABS not TC.

The ABS will attempt to unlock a locked wheel by releasing the brake on that wheel.

If two of the wheels are locked eg the fronts then the ABS will release the brakes on those wheels in an attempt to give steering control.

So you may have been partially slowed by the rear brakes but they have far less effect than the front brakes.

And yes ABS only works if there is friction/grip with the surface. EG on ice ABS is limited/ no use at all.

    Thanks for the information.

Had the brakes checked out today and all is good, so it was probably just a combination of one or more wheels sliding etc. and the rear brakes not being able to hold the 2+ tonnes of Land Rover on the slope.

Nothing that a set of BF Goodrich MT's shouldn't fix.

    Cheers,

    Chris
