TD5 WHICH ENGINE OIL????

As long as the oils meet the specs in the manual it is down to personal preferance.

We used fully synth Mobil in the UK then could only get Magnatec 10w40 in Pakistan but good as it cost $10 for 5 ltrs:D it ran Ok. We have been using Mobil 3000 in Oz as its 5w40 and seems to make the engine more responsive.

We have been changing our oil and both filters every 20 000 km as per our service schedual on our european model and the oil seems fine when it comes out & never burns oil. I agree the harsher conditions in the bush require frequent changes especialy the airfilter but you Australians seem to have been brain washed in to changing at 5000 km WOW!

Even 4X4 did an article some months ago with the conclusion that the shorter oil changes in OZ was to boost after sales servicing to bump up dearler proffits.

The standard oil change in the UK is between 20 000 - 30 000 km.

ive`d had 2 4cyl disco`s and 2 td5`s and i have always used castrol rx super we run it in our trucks aswell and have never had any trouble at all

Here in Greece i use Castrol Softec 5W40,i change it every 10.000 klms,the strange thing is that i can't find any info for Softec - is it discontinued or replace with magnatec? different names for different countries??
Knowdays on the back of the bottle,all you see is how to recycle etc,no info, the same applies for motorcycle oils,i use castrol Activo for my scooter (4 stroke),just no details on back of the bottle,you have to carry a computer and a network connection to go shopping..
Maybe more details on your market (bottle labels etc..)?

Interesting point Andy, but my service book says something like 20000k however used in dusty conditions service intervals should be 10000k.

Its my view that one of the most important factors on engine life is the oil. I do an oil and filter change on my TD5 every 6.5k km, which means two changes between 20k services. Cost of oil and filters is about $70. This seems to me to be a small cost (considering the overall cost of owning a 4wd) and is probably a good investment.

Totaly agree oil is cheaper than an engine.

Dident that Ron guy in 4x4 Australia use the same oil through africa then across Russia getting it tested it was still OK. think it was red line or something?

You'll find the recommended interval for oil and filters is lower in Australia as the "climate is more harsh than the UK". That said I've yet to see a comparison on whether LR applied this to Africa and other places to. So it could be an Australian thing.

The key thing to remember with the oil and filter changes though is that it's not just the mileage you do but how much work you make the engine do. So driving all day in Low 1 is going to be equivalent of driving all month on the freeway at 110kph. The difference being one gets you 250km the other 20,000km. Either way you need an oil change at the end of it. This is no different to plant equipment where they go on hours of operation to gauge service intervals. But could you imagine the average motorist recording how long they drove for? It is also part of the method by which the "service" lamp comes on, on many newer vehicles (like the D3 etc).

The oil recommended will also start to break down and higher than "normal" operating temperatures will increase this. So in a hot environment (like north Australia) it pays to change the oil more frequently.

As to what oil is best, as mentioned one that meets the specifications required. I have access to Castrol and Penrite at good prices so I stick to those brands for that reason. I would have to import anything else at significant cost.

Castrol Softec plus was used by the stealers in Brisbane when the TD5 first appeared.It was not available in drums less than 200l,but you could by a Castrol product that was an equivalent oil from elsewhere in 5l containers,but it's name i cannot remember.This oil was later replaced by fully syn Castrol edge,either 5w/30 or 0/w40,both OK for TD5.I would never use magnetec,even though it is in the Castrol catalogue for the TD5.It may be able to be used as last resort & also at shorter drainage intervals.
I am pretty sure fully synthetic oil is specified by LR for this engine.

As my TD5 is under extended warranty,i have it serviced at MR & they use Valvoline fully syn 5w/40 for both the TD5 & the Puma engine.

When using Castrol Edge fully syn 5w/30 in a previous TD5,we were doing a lot of work with Castrol refrigeration oils,& got to know the Castrol reps well.Twice i sampled the oil from the TD5 after doing 15k,after an oil change,& both times it was OK.At 20k it was again sampled & tested & their report was still OK,but should be changed.
Driving was mainly freeway & some around town & off road.No towing,no dusty conditions,&air temps less than 35'c
