just to drag this up again,
what make a TD5 smoke like a 300tdi?? ive just returned from a trip from SYD to ACT and noticed that up hills im smoking like a worn out toyota

the trip was 573klm i sat on 110-115kph and returned with a full length roof rack on and still have 1/4 of a tank left. so that should be 11L/100ish

from the sight of the smoke ide have expected alot worse?
    any ideas?

    cheers phil

so you fixed your fuel consumption issue? What was it?

I am using 12.8L/100....and I think it is a bit high. Auto.

Tombie2 remap and a defender 3/4 rack. I am going to try taking off the rack to see if it makes any difference..

i have no idea its still not right.
i did put the original AFM back in for the trip, this may have had an effect on the fuel and also the smoke?

    cheers phil

I noticed a rise in fuel economy when I put a roof basket on my Rhino roof bars (as well as extra noise) took the basket off for the next trip and the economy went back to the way it was.

Just for extra info, my TD5 over the last 12mths and since putting the silicon hoses, larger intercooler, 3" exhaust and EGR bypass the fuel economy has improved when towing, we now average 13l/100k as apposed to 15l/100k.
