So I changed my engine mounts

I am desperate to get rid of the 2200rpm drone on my TD5 & to date have done the cardan & this weekend, the engine mounts. It is still as droney as before but silky smooth either side of the rev range. Will oil in the injector loom cause this? Is it time for noise cancelling headphones?

    Hi
Unfortunatly I can't see the injector loom as causing a drone, it is only associated with lack of power and power cutting in and out. It could be the front driveshaft that is out of balance, take it off, lock in the center diff and take it for a drive and see if the drone is still there...and then go from there.
I need to do one of my engine mounts too, are the parts expensive? Will be easy to do on mine now that the head is off.

I had the front propshaft off for a few weeks & it made absolutely no difference to the drone.

I paid $143 ea for new genuine mounts from Stuart at Rovacraft. Your life fitting them should be much easier with the head off although I did not find it too difficult at all. Thanks to Pohm for the post with instructions.

I wouldnt be at all surprised if the new mount fixes it,,

new mounts tend to fix all manner of complaints with the TD5

Have you checked the exhaust flex joint just below the manifold, this will cause a drone, it can also cause a slight vibration too.

Uneven tyre wear could also cause a drone, or muddies like mine

Would the rubber coupling on the rear propshaft be the cause of the problem.

Check your harmonic balancer and belt tensioner pulley for bearing on its way out..

    Wow another Saffa!!
Will definatly change that mount while I am there.
Interesting that the drone did not disappear after you changed it, like others have mentoned, have a look at the rear rotoflex donut, could be a possible culprit.

So it appears unclear where the drone is coming from:

    1. If you rev the engine in neutral at 2200 rpm, do you hear the drone?
    2. If you rev the engine in drive whilst pressing the brake to stop forward movement (if auto), at 2200 engine rpm, do you hear the drone?

If NO to point 1, move onto non engine causes:

    1. Whilst in motion, does the drone occur in multiple gears when engine revs are kept @ 2200 rpm?

If YES, investigate torque converter or clutch assembly or input shafts to transmission.

    2. Whilst in motion, with engine revs @ 2200 rpm, if transmission is disengaged (neutral selected), do you hear the drone?

If YES, move onto other drive-train components, diff/s etc

My drone experience was a failing torque converter. Two of the three mounting bolts securing the TC to the mount plate had failed, so under load at a specific engine rev range, caused a serious drone. New TC and flex plate fixed the problem.

    Good luck..
