    Fuel Pump/Ace or Something Else?

    Hi All,

    A difficult one to describe.
    D2 V8, SLS & ACE.

Have a very light horn type noise coming from the rear of the car. It sounds like a quiet car horn almost, even call it a humming sound.

It seems to have a pattern, whenever there is a light fuel load on, under halfway, in hot weather and always under acceleration. The second I take my foot off the pedal it stops, apply it and it starts again, hold the foot on the accelerator it will go on for a little bit (20 secs) then stop until I take my foot off the accelerator and apply again.

Cold weather no issue. Thought it might be the fuel pump, however I am not convinced.

Have had it for a while now, but seems to be getting slowly worse, however could be in line with the increased hotter weather.

Just wondered if this is common with the V8's and what the possible casue is, I am even thinking vacumme related to something, however would love to get it fixed, hopefully a simple one. Hopefully........

    Thanks
    JB.

    JB,

A few of us have had that problem. I always thought it was the ACE (just a gut feeling), but it disappeared and has never returned since I removed the original tank and replaced it with a pair of Long Ranger tanks. I did not change the fuel pump. So I am now guessing that it was probably something to do with air returning to the tank. But I stress that that is just a WAG.

Try and remove the fuel cap while you drive and see if it goes away.

yep its definatley a low fuel, tank under pressure thing.

I would think the cap would come off with a resounding belch!!

Thanks Guys, so is it a fuel tank pressure issue?

Does anyone know what the possible solution is? Thinking that because it"s a LR I am not the only one who has encountered this issue.

Just want to find a solution as it"s driving me nuts and I have concerns on reliability if I ma out in the bush.

    Cheers

I'm not sure there is a solution,,
cos Im not sure its a problem,,

mines done it since I've owned it,,
never stopped it from operating as per the manual,,

I suppose you could drill holes in the cap to let the pressure out,, but----

Thanks Pedro. However it"s quite audible both inside and outside of the car when it does it. Surely it's not normal to have such a noise occurring?

It does sound like the noise a fule pump makes when it"s about to go, however I am sure that's not it.

Just strange as some D2's I have been in don't do it.

I doubt you could hear "my" concern with the engine running.

Now i know this is unlikely to be your issue but when i first got my D2 I was having a similarish problem. Light humming/buzzing noise from the rear of the car, noticeable sometimes when idling and when on light throttle but would go away when you put the foot down.

Turned out it was the license plate vibrating and buzzing against the rear door...

2 small sticky pads underneath it and the noise went away.

Like i say, sounds more like the fuel tank pressure thing others have mentioned in your case but might be worth a check just incase...

Mine's doing this now too. It's exactly as described in beginning of post. Fuel tank thing is a possibility but it does that as well!

    Will check my number plate.
