    CDL

Why does my CDL keep poping out this has only become a issues since it popped out going up Tower of terror (which would not have helped the cause of a breakage front axel and cv)
it seems to disengage once put under pressure with the lockers on and only when i have the Transfer case in 1st or 2nd ???????????

The 49% maxi drive reduction gears where put in 3mnths ago could there be a problem when they put it back together cause prior to that never had the problem
    Cheers Kelvin

    Hi Disco Thrasher,

Could be that the cable between the lever and the CDL sprigot on the transfer case is not adjusted correctly - ie. to tight. This wouldn't allow the CDL actuator to seat correctly, therefore not fully engaged and allowing it to jump out.

Try adjusting the tension on the cable and see how you go.

    All the Best.

Also make sure you're changing between H and L while rolling slowly - NOT while you're stationary as it doesn't always go in properly and will pop out with a bang!

Im assuming you mean it drops out of range as opposed to out of lock.

If its out of range the book (well the early book)says..

"to change ranges on the transfer case, bring the vehicle to a halt on flat ground in first or reverse gears keep the clutch depressed and shift from one range, into the nuetral position and then into the next range. Once the shift is completed OR if the shift will not complete maintain effort on the lever in the direction of the desired range and slowly raise the clutch."

The new version of the book lists shifting at up to 8kph possable. I teach the former as the prefered method of range changing. as previosly mentioned Maintaining effort on the lever is important once it seems like its in.

IF its still jumping out you have a combination of sloppy linkages and worn dogs in the Tcase.

If its jumping out of Difflock that can be caused by 1 of 4 things OR a combination of the lot

    1. Its not engaging properly due to sloppy linkages
    2. Its got crap in the detents and isnt engaging properly
    3. The mounts are sloppy and the engine/trans is rocking over knocking the lever out of position (usually combined with a PP attempt at re-installing the insulation on top of the tunnel)
    4. The splines for the locking collar are worn and when it gets loaded in a certain way will push the locking mech back.

the last is not all that common and typically means the Tcase wants a rebuild.
