I will agree with Phil also, having had this myself, the easiest way to check is to look for soot around the exhaust manifold at the rear, this is usually the first stud too brake.

Hi all, thanks for your replies.

But this noise stops when the brakes are applied? cos your not accelerating anymore..try braking with your foot on the accelerator.
Doesn't the exhaust manifold make a more tick tick noise? not on a TD5 most ppl describe it like you have, words like chirping, squeeling etc.
I will look at the exhaust manifold, though the noise is there whether in gear or neutral and does not alter if I rev it in neutral. I did try the foot on the brake and accelerator and the noise stopped when the brakes were applied.
I will also look at the vacuum lines though the EGR has been removed and I did plug the T piece, maybe it has come loose.Quote:
"The noise is happening regardless of vehicle motion, but ceases when brakes applied?
If this is the case I would be looking at the vacuum lines from booster and alternator."
The noise seems to be something to do with the rotation of the wheels and can be heard clearly on either side of the car eg passenger window down. This makes me also tend towards the brake pads.
I didnt mention that I live in the Adelaide Hills and the noise starts after driving at higher speed eg 100km/hr but once it starts it continues at low speeds as well. So it could be possibly heat related. The noise is not there when the car is stationary.
Thanks again and appreciate further thoughts.
Cheers
David
gday Dave,
I went thru something similar and was told it was the manifold studs, but the foot on the brake is the only difference, mine was like it for about 2 weeks then 1 day 'car she no start' in the end it was the bearing in the idler pulley and it had melted itself to the housing so driving it with the noise was obviously it having already collapsed...but the brake peddle is the only difference.
If all else fails, remove the main belt and see if its still there.
I know its off from what others have said but thats what i found with mine.
Cheers Ean
hows the power steering fluid level and conditioning as a curious after thought....
although my initial thoughts are vacume related.
Thanks Ean, Did the noise increase with acceleration? My noise is definitely on and off when I put my foot on the brakes but does not change with acceleration. I also had the idler pulley replaced about 2 months ago. I could hear a noise at idle while car was stationary.
Thanks Blknight.aus, Power steering fluid level is ok but will have another look.Quote:

I have not checked the exhaust manifold yet but will tonight.
Does the fact that the sound comes on once the car has been driven at speed(within limits of course) for say 20kms on hills roads therefore is at the higher end of running temperature ring any bells with anyone??
Cheers
David
Gday David,
I first heard the noise whilst standing wait to be picked up by my wife, and it was there with the car moving and not quite as loud at idle but definately there.I have heard heaps of bearing about to fail and having failed before, and there was no way it sounded like a bearing noise, buut as I said the brake thing is whats different.
You say you had yours replaced, did they check the harmonic balancer, most of the rubber in mine was gone, so that got done as well.
I know this is left field , but, hey its worth a look..
Hope you find it , there's nothing worse,
Cheers Ean
I have not inspected the other options offered as yet but will soon. While driving home last night while the noise was happening I put the car in neutral and revved the motor a couple of times. This had no affect on the sound at all so I am certain it is wheel/brake related.
Cheers
David
Could be a wheel bearing, jack one up at a time and spin it, see if the noice is there, that should tell you, that's how I tracked down a grinding noise I had, this noise went away if I turned the steering wheel to the right or went around a right hand bend:eek:
Baz.
Could it possibly be an engine mount..put the jack under the sump and jack a little putting some weight on the jack and see if it goes, could be just 1 failing...
Simple and quick to do...Worth a try..
Cheers Ean
