    Lifters

    Hi all, some advise please.
I have a 2000D2 ES V8 and was wondering if lifter noise is common? And if there's anything I can do to sort the problem. Seems to be worse when cold of course but definitly still present when up to running temp. Gonna change the oil and filter and make sure the oil is decent if u can recommend a particular sort and go from there. Only just purchased her so I have almost no history.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Mat

Modern oils and flat tappet old school pushrod engines don't mix. Avoid synthetic oils in these engines. Use an old style mineral based oil that still has a high zinc content in it as it's this that protects the cam/follower interface. Modern oils have reduced zinc content because catalytic converters don't like it, and most modern engines use roller tappets these days anyway.

Replacing a cat now and then is a lot easier and cheaper than a camshaft.

I recommend Valvoline VR1 which has plenty of zinc in it or KMart KMX 20/50 (which I use in my racing Mini where it has to service both the engine with race profile flat tappet cam and the gearbox/diff at 8,000 rpm).

Definitly makes sense, I'll give it a go. Will the brand of oil filter make much difference?
    Thanks for the advise

I probally wouldnt hurt to run a cleaner throught it as we have found a lot of V8 had been getting full synth oil through them but it has been the 0 wieght oil like for the new holden motors. That is not go for those motors as they actually sludge up inside.

Try that or run some clean oil through it nothing to thick first even if you change after 500km of driving to clean it as well. As for oil a semi-syn oil like Magnetic is good to clean it.
    good luck
