    Transmission leak ?

    Hi all,

Need some info on the probable spots for a transmission fluid leak?
On the way across to Perth, and when we stopped at Ceduna yeaterday noticed some spots on the spare wheel.

So had a squizz underneath and saw a bit of a drip and oil over the bottom of the vehicle.

Rang the RAA and he got me to follw him around to his workshop and we put it up on the hoist and he decided it could of been comming from the drain plug. So he gave it a bit of a tighten washed off the oil and I went for a 5km drive then we checked it again and it seemed ok.

But!! On the way to Norseman it has been leaking again.

Hoping to make it to Two Rocks tommorow. ( Destination) as i dont like my chances of getting much done here.(Norseman)

If its not the drain plug, what else could it be and how do I fix it?

    Cheers
    Craig

Well .. I can't help on figuring out the leak ... as you have to clean it down and visually inspect it ....

But.. There are a couple of steel transmission lines that go from the body of the Autobox to the radiator ... You could check to see if the nuts are tight and make sure that the steel pipes arn't rubbing against something (like a bracket)

If they are rubbing ... then you will feel (or see) a flat spot in the steel pipe and a pin hole

If you need some links to our local mechanics or Auto speciality folks .... Just give us a shout ....

BTW .... Lighten your load ... You won't need the extra diesel .....

    Ok, Thanks for that Mike.

I thought I read somewhere that the Oil cooler pipes (the steel pipes) can leak. Will do a bit of searching and see what I can find.

    cheers

No I dont have a tranny dipstick or Oil.

The RAA said you have to have it running when checking the fluid level and run it through the gears at the same time.

Which is nice and easy on a hoist. Not so easy when its on the ground, bloody side steps hang down just low enough so u cant slide under, or maybe its time I went on a diet, Nah must be the steps

Well buy some tranny oil .... Look in your service / owners manual for what flavour to use

But if your no good with the tools .... Then just call the RAC ......
Kalgoorlie is your next best town to stop & get it checked out if your worried ....

BTW ... Sent you a PM ... I'm sure Pat303 would be happy to help, if it all went pear shaped

My 2 cents would be on----
Power steering pump leaking,, (nearly a compulsory LR Anti-rust Feature till the D3 came along)
    or the transfer case seal,,
