    Towing 1 Ton- V8 or TD5

Is there much difference between the two when towing a 1 ton camper trailer? Will they both hold good speed on the hills? I'm sick of going slow up hills (currently have a '97 2.7 Prado).

chipped the td5 will pull about 1.5 T up the toowomba range with ease so much ease that you will be cursing the cars in the right hand lane.

Chipped Td5 will outperform a V8, and use half the fuel doing it.

Forget the petrol engines, innefficient things of the past.....

    as a usefull guide DAVE,,,
towed the camper up the range after the DO (last weekend)
    2nd gear at 60 kph,,,

funnily enough DAVE,,, thats the current speed limit UP the range,,(you camo guys must have special licences)
so even if you had a D4 (my next car, yes Justin,, it will be a diesel) with 600 odd twists,, you are still limited as to how fast you can travel.

No special liscence, just my hatred of sphincter nibblers who, when you've just popped into the right lane to go past a semi decide to go racing up the left lane, cut you off and then go at a speed thats just under the limit and right on the change point between 2 gears.

then at the top they have the audacity to apologise and say "sorry, I had no idea that you 'd be able to do the speed limit up the hill"

and the last time I went up the limit was 70 most of the way except for where you crest out into the roundabout where its 60.

My D2 Manual 4.0 V8 tows my 21 foot vagabond (2 tonn) very nicely. I was in second to third up the Cunningham's gap range (with a VERY loaded vehicle and boat with camping gear) always backing off for my brother in law's Isuzu TD Holden Rodeo who was towing an old ski boat at a fair bit under my weight....ohh...I was running on LPG too.

When you are talking a tonn you wont notice if behind the V8. The TD5 chipped, who knows...some people reckon they are better than the bent 8 but has anyone taken them out and dragged them side by side with a load...perhaps the TD5's impressive clunks and pings under the bonnet and the symphony of 5 cylinder noise makes it all seem so fast

The V8 sounds like a large burbling sowing machine its so smooth when revving out....nice. Run it on LPG and forget about it.

    Cheers

Picture what you have, and then add 60% more peak torque which is all in a rev range where you use it all and with better fuel consumption.

    Thats a chipped/intercooled TD5.
    Cheers
