Yeah, you can up the power, but the tranny might not like it.![]()
I was just having some fun. The chipped TD5 must be good because the original without mods was a bit light on, so many people are modding their TD5's and their figures are clearly good on the dyno. They seem to be lasting dont they? That was my concern with upping the HP so much, but Slunnie has addressed this before - it all seems impressive really.
Cheers
PS...now if I could just get past the knocking sound...

Simon - you talking manual, auto or both?
Cheers
save for the larger longer lasting clutch on the V8's I get the impression that the stock TD5/V8 is a truck that is all in balance...up the power too much and you risk injury to the drivetrain somewhere - diff, axles, tranny etc.
Cheers
My understanding is that the Td5's were dumbed down to meet the Australian emission standards. So, all things being equal and as long as you don't go past the original european specs .... SHOULD all be OK.
My non-chipped manual Td5 happily tows my 1 tonne camper trailer. It does slow down on hills, but I'm not trying to win any races and let's face it .... it's a large 4WD and not designed to be driven fast .... especially with a tonne or two on the back.
...... and I love the sound of the diesel.

For towing you want torque. The 4.0 V8 doesn't really produce enough of it in a heavy 4x4. Ideally the long stroke 4.6 with a high torque cam is what's needed - this will have 300+ ftlb of stump pulling power, enough to make your nose bleed.
A chipped TD5 may be able to hold its own with the 4.0 but a worked 4.6 will leave it standing. And then there's the noise it will make ..... and it won't be clatter, clatter.
For the money you save on buying a V8 over the TD you could probably put a 4.6 in it. Fuel consumption will be worse than the TD of course, but maybe a bit better than the 4.0. On the other hand the V8 will be relatively cheap and easy to service compared to the diesel, so you'll save money there.
You are probably right!
What I meant was the TD5 was designed to have a far greater output than it's current specs, but had to meet the Euro III emisions standard.
So it's capable of an upgrade without to many other mods to cope .... however after an ECU upgrade may not comply with Australia's current emmision laws ...... and now we're getting off topic.![]()
..I just love my supercharged 3.9, 4500 revs and 9psi boost towing 2tonnes of metal float and horse flesh just under the legal limt on the steepest of Tassie hills...
The exhaust note sounds wonderful only tempered by the intermittant roar of the viscous fan cutting in and out, in and out...until the next servo that is, when all is quiet again
PS, as a comparison a D3 owner I know completed 800 plus klms trip towing a double horse float with 2 large (15,17h) nags on board averaging 12L/100klm (normally 8-9L/100klms), with speeds of up to 110kph!! Far too fast - but twas not me driving. Downside, service and repair costs - brake probs from repeatedly stopping that weight (far too little trailer assist), and an air suspenison sensor failure to boot - the Stealer had a field day![]()
