Did you bleed it 3 to 4 times BEFORE driving it? If not, it will be VERY airated. Turn key to 'on' pos and wait till fuel pump times out, repeat 4 to 5 times, then try cranking WITH FOOT ON ACCELERATOR TO THE FLOOR while cranking.

Battery MUST be in good nick.

Bleeding these is as easy as turning key 'on' until fuel pump times out, usually 25 to 30 seconds. Some early Disco and Defender don't time out until about a minute or more.

If you have access to a jump start vehicle, I would rest the battery for a while, and connect the vehicle up to yours for about 15 minutes to give your battery a surface charge. The quicker they crank over the better. Don't worry, they can sometimes take ages to restart after running them without bleeding. Main things are Battery must be in good nick, and accelerator must be on the floor.

Yes whitish grey smoke is normal, poor fuel spray as fuel rail is full of air, low pressures = poor spray patterns= no atomisation = smoke.

    Keep going it'l go soon.

From the owners book(Had to do this to mine as I did the same thing on my first filter change also).

1..Turn ign. key off for 15sec.
2..Turn to position II and wait 30sec.
    3...Repeat steps 1 and 2 six times
4...After the final 30sec. period, fully depress the accelerater pedal.
5..Keeping the pedal depresed, start cranking the engine.
6..Continue cranking the engine and as soon as the engine is firing smoothly, ease the accelartor pedal back to approximately halfway through it's travel, and release the starter key. The engine should now be running.
7...If the engine fails to start, repeat the process.

Did this to mine and she ran OK.
    Cheers, Kyle

Step 6 from book requires the starter to be held in the start mode until the throtle is at Half throtle. Don't turn from start to run till then.
See how you go.It will blow smoke as said.

As JC said hook up a jump batt., could be picking up low voltage while cranking bringing on the dash light.
    Cheers, Kyle
