There was a really excellent review of winches about 9 months to a year ago or so in 4WD Action. The best winch from memory was a Premier winch. The various winch performances didn't match their costs necessarily.
I would also recommend you look at how the various parts of the winch are sealed. Cheaper winches (like the Warn Magnum winch) don't have a seal on the freewheel/engage knob so every time you go through water, if the winch is hotter than the water, it just sucks in water. Manual says have to pull the winch apart every time you go through water which I find ridiculous. Annually maybe. I partially solved the problem by getting a waterproof bag just bigger than the gear box end and clamping it over that end with screw clamps. Can operate the knob through the bag.
